Abolish Irradiated Labor Everywhere!

MayDay No Nukes Convergence

Wednesday May 1st 2013 4PM @ Union Square
(Gather at Northwest corner / look for the hazmat bloc)
Contact: info@jfissures.org  or 917-746-5735

Fukushima Nuclear Disaster in 2011 shed light on the working conditions in all nuclear industries around the world. At the crippled power plant in Fukushima, Japan, thousands of workers are still working to contain the damage, while being exposed to high levels of radiation. The current labor conditions and cover-ups give little protection for the health of the hundreds of thousands of workers. We call for a solidarity with irradiated workers everywhere and for abolition of nuclear energy and weaponry that is built upon the sacrifice of human lives.Irradiated labor has expanded into people’s everyday life near the Fukushima plant due to the State negligence and TEPCO’s negligence.  Mothers, fathers are standing up to protect lives of the children, and the young people are raising voice to protect the future.
This May Day, join us and put on a hazmat suit to imagine the invisible radiation.

No Heroes.

No Robots.

No Guineapigs.

No Nukes.

Representatives from 24 organizations from across the United States have petitioned the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to revoke the operating license of the General Electric Mark I and Mark II boiling water reactors like those at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear site in Japan. More than 2,500 co-petitioners are calling for the emergency closure. The NRC public meeting will be broadcast live in a webcast and toll-free telephone conference call by the agency on Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 1 to 3PM Eastern.

“Anybody paying attention during the Fukushima disaster knows that if a nuclear accident happens here these same reactor designs very likely will not protect us from radiation releases,” said Paul Gunter, Director of the Reactor Oversight Project for Takoma Park, MD-based Beyond Nuclear. Read the full press release.

Can We Forget Fukushima? Pouvons-nous oublier Fukushima ?
On March 9th 2013 at 13h30, Let's take our energy future into our hands and make a human chain to encircle Ottawa Federal Parlement where the Atom's rule!! Le 9 mars 2013 à 13h30, prenons en mains notre avenir énergétique et faisons une chaîne humaine pour encercler le parlement fédérale à Ottawa, là où l'atome est roi!

Nuclear power is excessively dangerous and expensive to the people and all living beings. Let,s not forget the waste issues and threats that it brings along. It is NOT acceptable. L'énergie et l'armement nucléaire sont excessivement dangereux et coûteux pour les personnes et tous les êtres vivants. N'oublions pas aussi les problèmes des déchets et la menace qu'ils apportent à long terme. Ce n'est pas acceptable.

This technology has created everlasting disasters like Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Chernobyl & Fukushima. The nuclear industry puts their own workers in danger getting contaminated via uranium mining. Cette technologie crée des catastrophes éternelles comme Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Chernobyl et Fukushima. L'industrie nucléaire met ses propres travailleurs en danger qui se contaminent via les mines d'uranium.

It is a myth to say that nuclear reactors do not affect climate change. Damage done to the environnement is irreversible!! C'est un mythe de dire que les réacteurs nucléaires n'affectent pas le changement climatique. Les dommages causés à l'environnement sont irréversibles !

Join the energy revolution and be part of the Human Chain event for a brighter future. Joignez-vous à la révolution énergétique et faites partie de l'événement de la chaîne humaine pour un avenir meilleur.

This two-day symposium – the first independent conference on this subject and a project of The Helen Caldicott Foundation – will be held at the New York Academy of Medicine on March 11 and 12, 2013, to coincide with the second anniversary of the nuclear melt-down at the Fukushima Daiichi reactors.
Scientists, physicians, engineers, political leaders, and policy makers will present and discuss the preliminary data thus far amassed on the bio-medical and ecological consequences of the disaster both for Japan and, potentially, the rest of the world.
In the year-and-a-half since the disaster, reports have slowly emerged about the health and environmental effects — from increased incidences of thyroid abnormalities in Japanese children to deformities in the insect, bird, and butterfly populations around Fukushima to increased levels of cesium present in tuna caught off the coast of California. It is clear that much research by the world’s scientists still needs to be done, work which will take years, if not decades, to complete as the effects of radiation exposure on human –as well as flora and fauna –populations make themselves manifest. It is equally clear that an open forum such as this symposium will play an influential role in pointing the way forward in the evaluation of both the immediate and on-going effects of the melt-down.
It will play a vital role in educating the media and stimulating debate among policy makers and government leaders in the world community on whether nuclear power can continue to be considered a viable means of energy production given the global public health implications of its use and the consequences that ensue when catastrophic incidents such as Fukushima occur.

Create Your Own Flash Mob 'Die-in' to Remember Fukushima Victims on March 11 @ 12:45 PM

Here’s how it works:
A minimum of 4 people plan to meet at 12:15 in a popular park, playground, or mall – anywhere pedestrians will be walking back to work or school after lunch. Everyone spreads out among the pedestrians, then all collapse in unison at 12:45 and ‘play dead’ for about 2 minutes. A few seconds after people fall, the designated poster-bearer walks among the fallen, carrying a Nuclear Fallout poster (download ours free or make your own), which explains to onlookers what they are witnessing and why. “Won’t you please come to Chicago – no one else can take your place!  We CAN change the world!…” – Graham Nash
A Conference observing the 70th Anniversary of the 1st sustained chain reaction, and the birth of the Nuclear Age
On December 2, 1942, an experiment at the University of Chicago led by Enrico Fermi produced the world’s first human-made sustained chain reaction, and launched the Nuclear Age.  The Nuclear Age has not been kind to everyone –  beginning with the people of Japan.   The Faustian bargain continues to this day – with the Japanese again becoming nuclear victims after Fukushima, and the world threatened by the continued presence of both nuclear weapons and nuclear power radiation releases and wastes.
Building on the observation of previous conferences first 40, then 30 years ago, this Conference notes that to this day, not a single ounce of radioactive waste has been permanently disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. And it bears witness to those fellow humans to whom the Nuclear Age has been less than kind.
This is a call to come to the very birthplace of the Nuclear Age – memorialized by Henry Moore’s sculpture to Nuclear Energy (photo above), on the very site where Fermi’s experiment occurred – to remember its victims, and seriously question whether that Age has the right to continue among civilized human beings.

Hearings were due to open Nov. 13 before the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in Courtice, near Oshawa. But the commission said Friday that the hearings have been put off until Dec. 3. The delay is because of the “high number of interventions,” according to the notice. A commission spokesman said there have been 200 interventions filed, with 90 groups or individuals requesting time for oral presentations. Ontario Power Generation, which owns and runs the reactors, is proposing to give the reactors a mid-life overhaul.

Mass trespass at EDF’s Hinkley Point nuclear power station: October 5-8 2012

Following the success of the mass action at Hinkley Point nuclear power station in Somerset, the Stop New Nuclear alliance is now planning a mass trespass on the site earmarked for the Hinkley C mega power station.
In March, around 1000 people took part in a 24-hour blockade of the entrance to EDF’s nuclear power station in Somerset. This was one of the largest and longest blockades of a nuclear power plant in the history of the anti-nuclear movement.
Now the Stop New Nuclear alliance aims to return to Hinkley and trespass on the area designated for Hinkley C. The aim is to highlight the fact that EDF is already trashing fragile land in preparation for construction – even though the company hasn’t got planning permission and investors are looking less and less interested in putting their money into the project.

US #antinuclear ACTION Aug 19-25
#StopPlantVogtle ATLANTA SOLIDARITY

To all our allies, our comrades, our friends.
To those who love their children
and want to see them grow up in a safe, healthy environment.
To those who want to find sustainable ways to live,
who want renewable energy.
To those who don’t believe the lie that nuclear power = safe, clean power,
who witnessed the widespread murder
by radioactive bombs from Japan in 1945 to Iraq in 2003,
and the radioactive disasters at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and now Fukushima.
To those who are suffering from cancers and disease,
who know they were slowly poisoned by the factories and plants of the ruling class.

To those leading the fight against the resurgence of nuclear reactors,
and against all nuclear — the bombs, the reactors, the waste.

We are calling on everyone, everywhere.

To those veteran organizers, those inspired to Occupy, and those ready to begin…

This August 19th-25th do whatever you can to Stop Plant Vogtle.

Whether it be leading a solidarity action at a nuclear reactor near you demanding they shut down both yours and Vogtle, whether it be protesting outside a Southern Company office or any Dirty Energy office, whether it be taking some time out of your day to learn more about the Vogtle reactors and the dangers of nuclear power and sharing it with your friends online with hashtag #stopplantvogtle…

It’s the big bet of the US nuclear industry — and the weakest link.
No action is too big nor too small. Help us fight for a cleaner, safer, healthier world!

And be sure to take pictures/video of your solidarity and send them (or links to where they’re posted) to stopplantvogtle@gmail.com!

Sincerely,
the Stop Plant Vogtle atlanta working group

OCCUPY NUKES hiroshima day AUGUST 6 | OWS Environmental Solidarity

OWS Environmental Solidarity Working Group calls for OCCUPY NUKES, a national day of action against the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal. On August 6th, Hiroshima Day, take action against a part of the war machine–nuclear warheads, which number 10,000–that takes up $7.6 billion of the Obama FY 2012 budget.

The 99% have tools to transform this waste and danger into structures that meet our real needs: true sustainability, (true security,) just food production, jobs, renewable energy, affordable housing, education, and economic justice. We awaken in order to do so on August 6.

Occupy Nukes will take place in New York City, San Francisco, Santa Fe, and Los Alamos, NM, as well as in solidarity with what activists do all over the world at this time to remember the U.S. government’s use of nuclear warfare, to oppose its continued use of nuclear warfare (as with depleted-uranium weaponry), and to radically turn from nuclear technology and dirty power.

To participate in New York City, our direct action will meet across from the (eastern face of the) GE Building (30 Rockefeller Plaza), at the steps that descend into the sunken cafe area.  Be there at 5:30pm, August 6.  Wear black.

EVERY FRIDAY EVENING, TENS OF THOUSANDS OF JAPANESE ARE PROTESTING OUTSIDE THE PRIME MINISTER’S RESIDENCE IN TOKYO AGAINST GOVERNMENT PLANS TO RE-OPEN JAPANESE NUCLEAR POWER STATIONS!
THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 3rd, FROM 9am-11am (at the same time as the regular Tokyo protest) WE WILL BE HOLDING A SOLIDARITY GATHERING OUTSIDE THE JAPANESE EMBASSY IN LONDON.
The Japanese Embassy is situated at 101-104 Piccadilly, W1. (Nearest tube Green Park)

after the Fukushima disaster all 54 nuclear reactors producing nuclear power in Japan were shut down for “safety checks” amid controversy as to whether they should ever be re-opened. In June, just two of these reactors were re-opened, sparking off an outpouring of anti-nuclear sentiment in Japan, of which these large continuing demonstrations are a part.

In this country the current government plans to extend the lives of the currently operating nuclear power stations and to build eight new ones, with up to two reactors each.

On Friday we will be both showing our solidarity with the Japanese protestors and saying, “End nuclear power in the UK!” No Fukushimas here!
Please join us outside the Japanese Embassy!

PLYMOUTH - The organization Cape Downwinders, whose mission is to “take action to protect the lives and welfare of the residents of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket against the threat of death or injury resulting from the use of nuclear energy…” is staging a march to the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.
Where: Staging area 1 Elliot Lane, Plymouth, with a 1 mile march to the gate of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station

When: Sunday, May 20, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

According to a press release announcing the march, Cape Downwinders holds that the Nuclear Regulation Commission is considering Entergy’s application for re-licensing the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station for an additional 20 years, without implementing critical lessons learned in Fukushima, Japan.

Cape Downwinders says that groups of concerned citizens will gather in Plymouth to demand that the Pilgrim nuclear power plant’s 40 year license must expire (it’s due to expire in June). The General Electric Mark 1 Boiling Water Reactor is the same design that failed at four reactors in Japan. Loss of offsite electricity was the cause and, according to NRC officials, a similar accident could happen here. The nuclear waste spent fuel pool was designed to hold 880 highly radioactive rods and currently holds 3,270... more

Occupy ENTERGY

The Activists Occupy Entergy! Starring our anti-nuclear heroes! (A homage to "The Artist".) - YouTube

Eight intrepid heroes from the New England Natural Guard affinity group, traveled to New Orleans, the headquarters of nuclear corporation, Entergy. They were there to occupy Entergy HQ on the day that the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor, owned by Entergy, should have ceased operation. Putting up crime scene tapes and holding banners, the group refused to leave without a meeting with Entergy CEO, J. Wayne Leonard. No meeting happened. 7 of the 8 agreed to be arrested, and were detained and released. Their actions came in solidarity with allies in Vermont, 1,000 of whom marched in Brattleboro, while a second affinity group of 5 were arrested at Entergy Regional HQ in White Plains, NY. The State of Vermont voted in February 2010 to shut the 40-year old Vermont Yankee plant when its license expired on March 21, 2012, a decision that was over-ruled by the federal government and Entergy which sued to keep the plant running in defiance of states' rights.

Beyond Nuclear - FREEZE OUR FUKUSHIMAS

"Freeze Our Fukushimas" is a national campaign created by Beyond Nuclear to permanently suspend the operations of the most dangerous class of reactors operating in the United States today; the 23 General Electric Mark I Boiling Water Reactors, the same flawed design as those that melted down at Fukushima-Daiichi in Japan.

FUKUSHIMA ANNIVERSARY TO BE MARKED BY PROTESTS,
RALLIES, FLASH MOBS ACROSS U.S. AND ENTIRE WORLD

From Alabama to Wisconsin, Vermont to California and across the world, the first anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster will be marked by protests, rallies, flashmobs and other actions from the growing movement for a nuclear-free, carbon-free energy future.

NIRS has compiled a list of Fukushima anniversary actions in the U.S. here: http://www.nirs.org/action.htm. Local contacts and/or links are provided for the actions. Note that there is a link to a different page listing actions across the world, available in five languages.

The listed events include a wide variety of actions, from “die-ins” in several states to a mock “evacuation” of Vermont Yankee to rallies in California, New York and elsewhere. In Washington, DC, a goat named Katie, whose milk contained high levels of radioactivity when she lived near the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant in Connecticut and who has been stricken with inoperable cancer, takes her Farewell Tour to the White House on Sunday, March 11, at 12 noon.

FREEZE OUR FUKUSHIMAS - March Against Nuclear Madness!

Beyond Nuclear - FREEZE OUR FUKUSHIMAS - March Against Nuclear Madness! | March Against Nuclear Madness - FACEBOOK

March 2012 is “March Against Nuclear Madness” and Beyond Nuclear has created a new March Against Nuclear Madness Facebook page. We will be helping to coordinate, organize and promote events around the country throughout the month of March to commemorate the March 11, 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear catastrophe in Japan. We encourage you to post your events and ideas on this page.

We are inspired by the opposition to nuclear power in Japan where today only four of the country’s 54 nuclear power plants are still operating. As nuclear power plants there shut down for routine refueling, local government and citizen opposition are refusing to allow them to restart.

We are further inspired by the principled democratic action being taken in Vermont. Here in the United States, the nuclear industry and the federal government look to pre-empt a state’s right to self determination for an energy future in the public good. In Vermont, where the Fukushima-style Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant should have closed by a state legislative vote when its operating license expires on March 21, 2012, a lower court federal judge has ruled that Entergy can extend its nuclear madness by another 20 years – for now.

Anti-Nuke Walk To Begin At Oyster Creek - Berkeley, NJ Patch: Advocates from near and far will gather at the Oyster Creek Generating Station for a “No More Fukushimas Peace Walk” on March 2.

“Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant, the oldest nuclear plant in the country, has the same design as the Fukushima Nuclear Plant whose disaster caused the permanent displacement of 160,000 Japanese people,” Edith Gbur of Jersey Shore Nuclear Watch said.

The walk, which will call attention to the implications of the Fukushima accident for nuclear power safety in the U.S., will begin at the Forked River based plant and continue to the Indian Point power plant in Buchanan, N.Y. and finish at Vermont Yankee in Vernon, Vt.

“The walkers are Buddhist nuns, monks, and others from all faith traditions—about 10 to 15 in number,” she said.

The Buddhist walkers are from Grafton Peace Pagoda east of Buffalo, NY. Last year, the group was led by nun Jun San Yasuda, walking 206 miles from the Indian Point nuclear plant to Vermont Yankee.

The group will arrive on March 2 for a public gathering and begin the walk from Oyster Creek on Saturday.

“It's a wonderful opportunity for us to connect with local activists and concerned individuals along the way and hopefully bring renewed energy and determination to their work for a sustainable and peaceful nuclear free future,” said Christian Collins, a walk organizer.

SPRING ANTI-NUCLEAR ACTIONS 2012

WHAT IS YOUR GROUP PLANNING?
HELP US HELP YOU ORGANIZE AND MOBILIZE!

February 7, 2012

Dear Friends,

The first anniversary of Fukushima is rapidly approaching and groups around the U.S. and across the world are organizing protests and other actions. Not far behind are the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl anniversaries--traditionally times of action. And this year there is a also a call for support actions against Vermont Yankee on March 24, which was scheduled to close on March 21.

We've heard about protest rallies and other events in Vermont, Georgia, Maryland, New York and elsewhere; now we want to learn about and help with your plans!

We will be posting all actions we learn of on our website beginning next week, and putting out Alerts and press releases, posting on social networks, etc. to support them and do all we can to help you organize, mobilize and build turnout.

Please fill out a brief questionnaire here and let us know what you're planning and how NIRS can help.

International actions welcome!

Don't have an action planned yet? It's not too late! Gather some friends and plan one now; we'll help however we can.

A few thoughts:

*As you surely know by now, there are 23 General Electric Mark I Fukushima-clone reactors operating in the U.S. Nothing has been done to upgrade them or close them in the past year. All of them should be closed (along with all of the other "pressure suppression" reactors). None of them should escape being a target of protest and exposure this Spring.

*For that matter, the NRC has not implemented a single one of its Fukushima Task Force recommendations made in response to the accident. This blatant failure needs to be brought squarely into the public arena.

*Current emergency planning requirements in the U.S. (and many other countries) are simply inadequate and must be strengthened. NIRS will be launching a major campaign on this February 15; we'll send you details at that time, but it may help inform some of your actions.

*Vermont groups are asking for actions--especially at Entergy Corporation power plants (of any kind) and offices across the country--on March 24 in support of Vermont Yankee shutdown and against Entergy's continued legal war against the State of Vermont and its people. We hope your group will consider doing such an action. More information from the SAGE Alliance here.

*Actions at utility offices in cities are generally much more visible than actions at reactor sites in remote locations, especially if you have a small group of people. Even a few people with signs and handouts for passersby bring needed attention to the issue. Occupying utility offices provides even greater visibility (although, of course, the possibility of arrest)!

*Not part of a group or simply can't get out to an action? During March and April take advantage of the attention nuclear issues will be receiving and help build it: write letters to the editors of your local newspapers, blog postings, posts on social networks, call into talk radio shows, etc. Demand nuclear shutdown. Help let the world know that it's time to implement a nuclear-free carbon-free energy future!

Thanks for all you do,
