ACT NOW: Tell the House to Oppose the Nuclear Bailout and Save the Climate!

ACT NOW: Tell the House to Oppose the Nuclear Bailout and Save the Climate!

BIG NEWS: West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin reached a deal with Congressional Democrats on a sweeping climate and energy package that supposedly would address the climate crisis, now called the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA). The Senate passed the bill on Sunday, August 7, and the House of Representatives plans to vote on it this Friday, August 12.

This bill could have been our best – and maybe our only – chance to make real progress on fighting climate change and creating the just environmental and economic future the Biden administration promised voters. It should've been a major success for climate policy, thanks to tireless activists who worked to hold Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer accountable to get Sen. Manchin to the table on climate.

But, among the desperately needed good progressive measures in the IRA are bad policies and hundreds of billions of dollars in poison pills – handouts to fossil fuels, false climate solutions, and Big Nuclear. These provisions would profit dirty and polluting energy industries that are causing climate and ecological crises at the expense of taxpayers, environmental justice, and TRUE investment in the 100% renewable, just, and sustainable energy future we deserve.

Frankly, the harm they would cause can’t be justified, and may actually block renewable energy and other real climate solutions in the bill.

Of the $369 billion dollars, up to $72 billion is slated for subsidies to aging nuclear reactors — a wasteful expenditure that will not create a single new job, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by any amount, nor make any progress towards climate action. The measure is nothing more than a corrupt bailout scam by the nuclear industry and their cronies in Congress. There is also:

$250 billion in taxpayer-guaranteed loans to prop up old nuclear and fossil fuel power plants

$40 billion in taxpayer loans that could go to building new reactors and fossil fuel power plants

$700 million to promote domestic uranium mining and enrichment

We cannot settle for the inadequate, unjust, and wasteful policies in the Inflation Reduction Act. We cannot settle for a bill that backs false climate solutions and sacrifices frontline communities. We MUST demand better from Congress: a strong national policy for climate, the economy, and for environmental justice. The time to act is now. Demand that Congress and the Biden administration eliminate the massive subsidies to nuclear power and other dirty energy.

Tell DOE: Follow the law and DON'T bend the rules for the nuclear industry

The DOE wants your feedback on an outrageous and last-minute rule change that might enable ineligible nuclear reactors like Diablo Canyon NPP in California to illegally qualify for billions of dollars in subsidies. This would be a massive waste and a failure for climate action, in addition to being a blatant violation of the law.

The CNC was created by the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) to mitigate potential greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) increases due to the closure of unprofitable nuclear reactors that operate in competitive electricity markets. Now, the DOE is looking to change the rules in the eleventh hour, and give ineligible reactors a chance to qualify.

This is a bad bailout. This multi-billion dollar program should instead be invested in clean, renewable energy, NOT dirty and expensive nuclear reactors.

Stand Up for Clean Energy and Say NO To the DOE’s Latest Nuclear Bailout Scheme

The Impacts of Sanctions on Russian Uranium to the U.S. Nuclear Industry: A Nonissue NIRS

NIRS has joined our counterparts in Ukraine, calling for sanctions on Russia’s nuclear industry, including a ban on imports of uranium from Rosatom, the state-owned nuclear conglomerate. Doing so should not depend on there being no impact on the U.S. economy–we should have the courage of our convictions, and bringing an end to the wanton destruction and incredible suffering in Ukraine has to be worth some degree of burden.

But in the case of sanctioning Russia’s nuclear industry, that is not even an issue. People in the U.S. will never even notice, while another arm of Russia’s political and economic capital to sustain this war would be compromised. And as we have said before, we must directly sanction Rosatom (Russia’s state-owned nuclear conglomerate) for its direct involvement in the attacks on and occupation of Ukrainian nuclear power facilities in order to ensure that this war does not establish a precedent “normalizing” attacks on nuclear reactors and radioactive waste sites as legitimate military targets. Doing that in a way that will not even affect the lives of ordinary people in our country should be a no-brainer.

Yet, the U.S. nuclear industry has tried to confuse the public and policymakers about this since the first calls for economic sanctions to stop Russia’s invasion. Initially, nuclear corporations and their trade association, the Nuclear Energy Institute, lobbied the White House to be exempted from sanctions on Russia. They argued, falsely, that it was in the interest of protecting U.S. consumers from increases in electricity costs and keeping the lights on…

Public comments to NRC needed in opposition to the WCS/ISP CISF scheme, by Oct. 19 deadline! | Beyond Nuclear - Centralized Storage

Beyond Nuclear files hearing request, petition to intervene, opposing Waste Control Specialists/Interim Storage Partners  rad. waste CISF (Consolidated Interim Storage Facility) which would store 40,000 metric tons of highly radioactive, commercial irradiated nuclear fuel, if its license application to construct and build is approved. The scheme would also launch unprecedented numbers of shipments of high-level radioactive waste by road, rail, and/or waterway through most states.

We Need Renewable Energy, Not Nuclear Power! | NIRS

The nuclear industry is back at it again: promoting dirty, dangerous, expensive reactors at the public’s expense. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is reviewing an “Early Site Permit” application for up to a dozen reactors in Tennessee – with potentially no evacuation plans. This would be a dangerous precedent.

This time, the industry wants us to believe the “solution” is small, modular reactors – or SMRs. Their idea is to design each reactor smaller, and combine a bunch of them into one big power plant. However, these reactors aren’t really “small” and putting a bunch of them in one place only means more potential for disaster. The Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant only had three reactors operating when disaster occurred in 2011. They all melted down.
You’d think that would have taught NRC a lesson. But no – NRC is considering exempting SMRs from longstanding emergency planning requirements, even eliminating the need to have evacuation plans for nearby communities in the case of a meltdown.
Even worse, NRC is flatly ignoring the reality that there is no justification for nuclear power. NRC is supposed to consider both the need for electricity and the alternatives to a nuclear power plant, but its review of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s application ignores both. TVA’s demand for electricity is declining, not growing, and solar, wind, and energy efficiency are far cleaner, safer, and more affordable than the theoretical, untested SMRs.
Send a public comment to NRC, demanding that the agency withdraw its Draft Environmental Impact Statement, and conduct a new, objective study.

Don't Let Congress Waste America! • #DontWasteAmerica

Congress is attempting to push one of the worst nuclear waste bills we have seen in years. The Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017 is a nuclear waste bill that threatens nearly every state with decades of nuclear waste shipments.
If the passed, the bill would:
  • revive the failed Yucca Mountain (NV) site as a nuclear dump, despite volcanoes, earthquakes, its inability to isolate waste, and violations of environmental justice against Western Shoshone sovereignty and state authority.
  • direct the Department of Energy (DOE) to contract for a private corporate centralized “interim” parking-lot dump, which allows DOE to set up additional "temporary" storage sites, which are illegal under current law.
  • trigger thousands of intensely radioactive shipments on our roads, rails and waterways over decades.
  • weaken environmental and safety requirements for this deadly waste.
This dangerous bill must be stopped!
It would launch thousands of shipments of the deadliest radioactive nuclear waste ever made via truck, train, and/or barge shipments through 45 states, including the hearts of many major cities and farmlands, headed for Yucca Mountain, Nevada and “interim” parking lot dumps.

This is a major fight you can help win--Don't Let Congress Waste America!

Congress: Say No to More "Usable" Nuclear Weapons Union of Concerned Scientists

The Trump administration recently released its new "Nuclear Posture Review" outlining radical, dangerous, and costly changes in US nuclear weapons policy that will make nuclear war more likely and the United States—and the entire world—less safe.
This truly is an all-hands-on-deck moment. We need Congress to help stop this potential disaster.
They want to:
• develop two types of new more usable nuclear weapons on top of the seven we already have;
• make it easier to use US nuclear weapons;
• spend some $1.7 trillion over the next 30 years to re-build the entire US nuclear arsenal; and
• continue the absurd policy giving one person—the president—sole, unchecked authority to launch nuclear weapons.
Over the years we've defeated similarly dangerous proposals. With your help, we'll do it again.
Write to your members of Congress today and tell them to just say no to the Trump administration's new nuclear weapons policies. Urge them to speak out publicly and to actively oppose plans and spending for new nuclear weapons.
Nothing is more important than our safety and security. Nuclear weapons don't make us safe and we must do everything we can to prevent nuclear war.

Tell FERC One More Time: Stop the $100+ Billion Nuclear-Coal Bailout!

Make Your Voice Heard!
– Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary, Rick Perry, has proposed an unprecedented bailout for nuclear and coal power plants that will raise people’s energy bills and undermine renewable energy.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is fast-tracking the DOE’s radical proposal and plan to adopt it in 60 days. Public comments were due October 23rd, exactly three weeks after the plan was announced, and we delivered over 11, 420 comments to FERC.
The proposal calls for subsidies for old, outdated, and very polluting nuclear and coal plants under the guise that they promote electric grid reliability.
FERC is taking a final round of public comments until November 7. And we need to deliver thousands more comments to them! Even if you already signed a petition or sent a comment, please do so again for this final round.
It is still important to voice our opposition and the time to act is NOW! And after that, pass it on to your friends and to your contacts on facebook, twitter, Instagram, etc.
Stay tuned for more actions to take as we build this campaign to save our 100% Clean Energy Future!
