The great news is that Labor has won the election in a landslide and have a really strong mandate to legislate changes in Western Australia. We hope that they will legislate a ban on uranium mining in the coming months.

But we will have to keep on the to make sure this happens..

This years Walkatjurra Dates are now set for the 4th of August leaving Fremantle and returning on the 3rd of September. We are hoping for a really good turn out this year ad hopefully it will be a celebration of a Ban on uranium mining. If Labor have not done it by then we need lots of people to come and demand that they keep their promises..

WALKATJURRA WALKABOUT is a celebration of Wangkatja country, a testament to the strength of the community who have fought to stop uranium mining at Yeelirrie for over forty years, and a chance to come together to continue share our commitment to a sustainable future without nuclear.  It is a chance to reconnect with the land, and to revive the tradition of walking for country.

Zombies, giant sea god join large anti-nuclear protest at Olympic Dam | Adelaide Now | #LizardBitesBack

MORE than 100 anti-uranium protesters from across the nation dressed as zombies and marched to the “gates of hell” outside Olympic Dam on Friday. It marked the start of a three-day protest by the Desert Liberation Front outside the BHP mine at Roxby Downs, bringing with them a heavy police presence. STAR Group officers, sniffer dogs, mounted police, dirt bike patrols, a helicopter and a drone were all visible at the mine site during the event’s first day. About half of the 200 protesters, including children, walked 2km to the mine’s front gates chanting “leave it in the ground, Roxby’s going down”...

Traditional owners to walk to protest Kintyre mine - The West Australian

More than a 100 traditional owners from the regions around the proposed Kintyre mine site will undertake an eight-day protest against uranium mining operations in the East Pilbara next month.

Members of the Parnngurr and Martu communities will be walking through the Karlamilyi National Park to the proposed uranium mine from June 4-12, to send a message of opposition to Canadian-based Cameco’s uranium mine plans at Kintyre.

Parnngurr and Martu people have also released a joint statement with Leonora traditional owners around the proposed Yeelirie uranium mine, to coincide with Cameco’s annual general meeting held in Saskatoon, Canada, last week...

“If the government really wants to boost the Australian economy, how about making us a world leader in solar power and the renewables industry?

...The environmental group [GREENPEACE] turned up to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s electorate office in Sydney on Thursday equipped with a truck, white suits and six yellow barrels painted with radioactive symbols to deliver a message that nuclear waste is everyone’s problem.

On Wednesday, Mr Turnbull said Australia could plausibly mine uranium, sell it overseas for use in nuclear power stations, then take it back as waste.

This proposition was abhorrent to Greenpeace, who said the waste would impact Australia for “literally thousands of years...”

The new Prime Minister has given some significant signals that his government is more interested in science and good policy than his predecessor, but the nuclear thought bubble is just plain wrong headed,” said Emma Gibson, Greenpeace Australia Pacific’s head of program.

“If the government really wants to boost the Australian economy, how about making us a world leader in solar power and the renewables industry?

“Mr Turnbull has indicated that he wants to lead a government focused on innovation, but nuclear power is heavy old tech. We need to move towards clean, modern solutions to our energy needs, like solar power and other renewables," she said.

Nuclear option nonsensical, given Australia’s abundant renewable energy

Sydney, 28 October 2015 - Greenpeace Australia Pacific has slammed a call from Australia’s next Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel, for a renewed debate on the option of nuclear power as part of the country’s energy future.

“While we welcome government discussions on alternative energy sources, it's completely nonsensical to even pose the idea of building nuclear power stations in Australia when we have such an abundance of truly clean and renewable energy on our doorstep,” said Emma Gibson, Head of Program for Greenpeace Australia Pacific.

“If we used just 1 percent of land in Australia, we could produce enough electricity to power the whole country. [1]

“Nuclear power, on the other hand, is expensive, dirty and unreliable. It leaves a legacy of radioactive waste which remains dangerous for hundreds of thousands of years.

“We only have to look at the Fukushima disaster in Japan to be reminded of the health, social and economic impacts of a nuclear accident, and to see that this is not a safe option for Australians.

“No nuclear reactor has ever been built to deadline or within budget. Nuclear power is an expensive distraction from the real solutions to climate change, like solar and wind power.

“Any government seriously considering the nuclear option needs its head testing,” said Ms Gibson.

We've marked October 19th as a global Day of Recognition: that radioactive contamination from Fukushima threatens life everywhere.

And it will for generations to come.

We need to begin public discussion of the grave threat we face in the massive amounts of radioactive contamination released into the air and leaking into the sea everyday since three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant exploded in March 2011.

A 4th reactor unit also exploded, exposing a dangerous pool of spent fuel rods in a building that won't withstand another big earthquake. The cores have escaped their containment vessels and the situation at the site has been deteriorating rapidly all summer.

This nuclear crisis is not over.

The invisible dragon of Daiichi is loose, and will be for centuries. It's time to start talking about what this means for the world.

Stand with us on October 19th, in solidarity with the people of Japan. And here at home, let this be the wake up call we've been waiting for. We need to start demanding that our elected officials & agencies do what is necessary to test the water we drink, the air we breathe, the food we eat.

In your heart you know this is important, you know you should do something.

We are all connected by bodies of water and we are mostly made up of water. We have one globally connected ocean and each of us has one body. All life was born in this ocean. She needs our help now. We need her help.

8.9 SYDNEY: 'Nuclear Nation' film screening - ANFA fundraiser

Nuclear Nation is a documentary about the exile of Futaba’s residents, the region housing the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Since the 1960s, Futaba had been promised prosperity with tax breaks and major subsidies to compensate for the presence of the power plant. The town’s people have now lost their homeland. Through their agonies and frustrations, the film questions the real cost of capitalism and nuclear energy.

The screening is a fundraising event for the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance, and all funds raised will support Aboriginal communities on the frontline of nuclear projects to attend the annual ANFA national meeting in October. More info at www.anfa.org.au.

This screening is being held in Sydney on Nagasaki Day-Friday August 9- and is part of a series of events to commemorate the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Beyond Nuclear Initiative | Australian Nuclear Free Alliance

Formed in 1997, the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance (formerly the Alliance Against Uranium) brings together Aboriginal people and relevant NGO’s concerned about existing or proposed nuclear developments in Australia, particularly on Aboriginal homelands.

The Alliance provides a forum for sharing of knowledge, skills and experience. It is an opportunity to come together and find strength through our shared aims to protect country and culture from nuclear developments. The Alliance helped to build the successful campaign to stop the Jabiluka uranium mine in the Northern Territory, and more recently, a proposed national nuclear waste dump in South Australia. Currently, Aboriginal communities face a wave of uranium exploration, several proposed new uranium mines, and a proposed national nuclear waste dump.

Join us for a one month walk from Yeelirrie to Leonora from May 4thth – 28th May.  This walk will be lead by the Walkatjurra Rangers, in partnership with Footprints for Peace, Western Australian Nuclear Free Alliance (WANFA), the Anti Nuclear Alliance of Western Australia (ANAWA) and the Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA).

This Saturday 4th of May people from across Australia and around the World will be meeting with local Aboriginal people, Wangkatja people, to embark on a 3 week walk from Yeelirrie – WA’s largest uranium deposit to Leonora.

The 2013 walk will be the third walk through the Goldfields stepping out against uranium mining. This year has increased support and growing opposition to uranium mining after the Federal announcement to give a conditional, but not final, approval for Toro Energy’s proposed Wiluna uranium mine.

This year the walk will incorporate campaign training from the Australian Manufacturers Workers Union to help support communities who want to oppose uranium mining on their country.

Kado Muir chairperson of the West Australian Nuclear Free Alliance and Yeelirrie Traditional Custodian “Everybody is concerned about the potential for uranium mining. We all want to do our bit – to send the message that we don’t want uranium mining on our country. We’ve fought against uranium for over 40 years. We know uranium is different. Yeelirrie – in my area – is known as the place of death. We’ve always know that uranium must be left in the ground.”

“Between Wiluna and Leonora there is the potential for three uranium mines, that’s all the country we travel across, live on and hunt our kangaroos and goanna and emus on. If these uranium mines go ahead, we’ll lose our country for the next 10,000 years.”

“We’ve already had mining in this area for over 100 years; we’re still waiting to see any significant benefit. It is talked about but there’s no evidence. Every new company comes in with new promises but we never see any change.”

Marcus Atkinson, walk organiser and campaigner for the Anti Nuclear Alliance of WA said “The walk has been so important in connecting people with the local communities and the environment teaching people that the area is important.”

“Since the Federal conditional approval for the proposed Wiluna uranium mine more and more people have joined the walk. This is a new beginning for action and opposition to the proposed Wiluna uranium mine and other proposed uranium mines in the area like Yeelirrie, Lake Maitland and Mulga Rocks.”

“We are determined to keep WA nuclear free” he concluded.
