Landmark Federal Court Decision: Will It Speed Diablo Nuke's Demise?

California’s two remaining reactors are surrounded by more than a dozen seismic fault lines. The Shoreline fault runs within 600-700 yards of the Diablo cores, which also sit just 45 miles from the massive San Andreas fault—half Fukushima’s distance from the epicenter of the quake that destroyed it. Landmark Federal Court Decision: Will It Speed Diablo Nuke's Demise?

New revelations about earthquake dangers have shaken the future of California’s Diablo Canyon nukes.
In a rare move, Washington DC’s Federal U.S. Court of Appeals will hear a landmark challenge to their continued operation.
The suit says Diablo’s owners illegally conspired with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to weaken seismic standards. “This is a big victory,” says Damon Moglen of Friends of the Earth. “The public has a right to know what the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Pacific Gas & Electric won’t admit—hundreds of thousands of people are put at immediate risk by earthquake danger at Diablo Canyon.”

Diablo is also vulnerable on state and federal water quality regulations, economic concerns and more. Citizen activism has also shut operating reactors at Humboldt, Rancho Seco and San Onofre. Proposed projects have been cancelled at Bodega Bay and Bakersfield...

AGENCY: International Trade Administration, Department of Commerce.

ACTION: Notice.

-------------------------------------------
Event Description The U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA), with the support of the U.S. Department of Energy, is organizing the second Japan-United States Decommissioning and Remediation Fukushima Recovery Forum (``Fukushima Recovery Forum'') on April 9-10, 2015 in Tokyo, Japan. Building on the first Fukushima Recovery Forum held in February 2014, the 2nd Fukushima Recovery Forum will continue to develop U.S.-Japanese cooperation on Fukushima recovery efforts. The event will allow U.S. firms to hear from Japanese Ministries, utilities, and commissioning entities on the status of Fukushima recovery. It will be a forum for U.S. and Japanese firms to make contacts while sharing experiences, expertise, and lessons learned in remediation and decommissioning, including work underway at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station, and in Tohoku, the area affected by the accident at Fukushima. The event also addresses interest in cooperation in areas related to nuclear power as Japan moves forward with its plan for restarting its nuclear reactors and decommissioning some of its commercial reactor fleet. U.S. firms will also network with Japanese firms and identify potential business partners.

Florida Power & Light spars with national park over water needs for nuclear plant

Salt foam floats on Turkey Point cooling canals in November 2011. Over the summer, the increasingly salty canals topped 102 degrees, forcing the utility to ask federal regulators to increase operating temperature limits from 100 to 104 degrees to avoid having to shut down the plant’s two nuclear reactors. The utility now wants permission to pump up to 100 million gallons of water daily from a nearby drainage canal to freshen and cool the canals. MARICE COHN BAND MIAMI HERALD STAFF

To keep its nuclear power plant at Turkey Point cool, Florida Power & Light wants to make a temporary fix orchestrated over the hot summer into a more permanent solution.
But the request — to pump up to 100 million gallons of freshwater daily into plant cooling canals from a nearby drainage canal over the next 20 years — would rob Biscayne Bay of freshwater needed to revive ailing coral reefs and seagrass meadows and undo millions of dollars spent in Everglades restoration, federal officials said at a South Florida Water Management District meeting Wednesday.

The latest complaints come amid growing controversy over how the aging canals are managed. Earlier this month, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami asked the state Department of Environmental Regulation, which regulates power plants, to hold hearings on a new state management plan that they say does nothing to fix ongoing water problems...

No to nuclear nonsense: Groups call on Dominion to abandon plans for North Anna 3 reactor | FOE

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Friends of the Earth, with 13 other organizations, submitted a letter to Governor Terry McAuliffe, Members of the Virginia General Assembly, Nuclear Regulatory Commissioners and energy company Dominion Resources urging against building a third nuclear reactor at the North Anna Power Station in Louisa County, Virginia. This proposed reactor would sit on an active earthquake fault and lacks a reliable water supply for cooling three reactors. The letter also emphasized the project’s high cost, a lack of any safe waste disposal solution and other inherent safety concerns related to nuclear reactors.
Friends of the Earth’s former president Brent Blackwelder issued the following statement:
The nuclear tragedy at Fukushima should have made it clear that the risks of nuclear reactors are too great. Yet Dominion Virginia Power and the state of Virginia continue to flirt with disaster. It is unconscionable to spend a single cent on an energy source that carries the inherent risks of nuclear reactors. These risks are exacerbated at North Anna because the reactor sits on a known fault line. This is the same fault that just shook Washington, D.C. in 2011, damaging the Washington Monument and the National Cathedral. Safe, renewable and distributed energy alternatives already exist; and it is time that we stopped investing in false solutions.

“The medical dangers of the nuclear fuel chain begin at uranium mining and end with either a massive nuclear power plant meltdown, a nuclear war or the many diseases and mutations in animals, plants and humans that will arise from the inevitable leakage of radioactive waste and the subsequent pollution of food chains for virtually infinity. I will walk people through this highly complex issue so that they have a deeper understanding of the genetic and carcinogenic dangers of the nuclear age.”
CRISIS WITHOUT END and NUCLEAR POWER IS NOT THE ANSWER will be available for sale and signing after the talk.

Tell your Congressmembers to Dump Yucca!

February 2015

One of President Obama's first actions in office, back in 2009, was to end the Yucca Mountain radioactive waste project.

Overriding its own 1982 legislation, which required investigation of several possible sites for a permanent high-level nuclear waste repository, in 1987 Congress narrowed the list to one: Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

Why? Politics, not science. Nevada had a small, weak Congressional delegation while the other states involved, especially Washington and Texas, included many more members and Congressional leadership.

Obama's action was intended to end the practice that politics, rather than science, should determine the future of the nation's radioactive waste program.

But the nuclear industry and its most fervent Congressional backers have never given up on Yucca, and even now they're working to restart that project. That's despite the fact that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff now has recommended against any more work on Yucca, on the grounds that the federal government does not have the necessary water or land rights. Those are held by the state of Nevada, which has steadfastly opposed a radioactive waste dump at Yucca Mountain.

It's time to start educating Congress about the facts on Yucca Mountain. We're starting with the water rights issue. Tell Congress below to Dump Yucca once and for all.

Help Us Build a Different Nuclear Legacy

February 9, 2015
Dear NIRS Supporter,
We are trying something new this year. NIRS is launching our first crowdfunding campaign. And there couldn't be a better time and purpose. In the next ten weeks, we are going to give you every reason we can think of to support a very special project. We are calling it the Legacy Fund.
Usually, when you hear NIRS talk about "legacies" and nuclear power, it's about something we are trying to stop: the deadly, million-year problem of nuclear waste, and the radioactive burden we are passing on to future generations.
But, now we need your help to fight for a positive kind of legacy -- one that embodies our movement's bold and visionary mission, and our ability to fulfill it.
You may be aware that our longtime leader and current President, Michael Mariotte, is struggling with pancreatic cancer. What you may not know is that he has had a hand in most of the anti-nuclear movement's major campaigns and victories over the last three decades.
Check out our new short video, which highlights just a few of them, on our Michael Mariotte Legacy Fund page here--and share it with your friends.http://legacyfund.nirs.org/

It's an incredible legacy for one activist, but as Michael says himself--he is inspired and empowered by and truly works for the thousands of mostly unsung activists and ordinary people like you, who give their own time, energy, and voices to the fight for a safe, sustainable energy future. Michael's legacy is really all of ours, and we need to protect it and build on it...
