Despite the continuing radiation from the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe the Japanese Abe government continues to restart other nuclear plants in Japan. They are also preparing for a major earthquake that might kill over 200,000 people. The restarting of Japanese plants is a threat to the world. Another major earthquake in Japan could not only destroy Japan but also contaminate the entire world with nuclear radiation. No Nukes Action Committee has been organizing since the Fukushima meltdowns to defend the people of Fukushima and Japan and demanding that the Japanese Abe government stop the continued work to push nuclear power in Japan. The government is denying the growing thyroid cancer epidemic dangers and are pressuring the people of Japan to remain silent and accept their contamination. The Japanese Abe government has also said to the Olympics committee and the world that the Fukushima nuclear disaster has been overcome and Fukushima has been “decontaminated” This is a lie and propaganda. They have also said that you can “overcome” radiation. At the same time they have passed a secrecy law and conspiracy law that will be used against journalists and whistleblowers who are exposing the continued dangers at Fukushima.

They are also seeking to militarize and prepare for a new war with the introduction of nuclear weapons in Japan and in Okinawa where the government continues to build US military bases in preparation for a war against North Korea and China.

The militarization of Asia is the expansion of nuclear plants and nuclear weapons and we must speak out to stop these dangers and defend the people of Fukushima.

　今年5月から6月にかけて、危険なMOX燃料を使う福井県の高浜原発4号機、3号機が再稼働されました。また、同県の大飯原発3,4号機、佐賀県の玄海原発3,4号機も、再稼働に向け準備が進められています。さらに言語道断なのは、福島原発事故を起こした東京電力の柏崎刈羽原発をも、再稼働させるべく準備が進められていることです。事故収束さえできない東電に原発を動かす資格がないことは、誰の目にも明らかです。
 
　これらの原発再稼働の法的論拠になっているのは『エネルギー基本計画』です。2014年4月に安倍政権が福島原発事故を省みず、原発を「重要なベースロード電源」と改悪したことにより、非情な再稼働ラッシュが始まりました。来年にはこの『エネルギー基本計画』に加え、プルサーマル計画などに大きな影響がある『日米原子力協定』の見直しが行われます。私たちはこれを大きなチャンスと捉え、改善しなければなりません。
 
　森友・加計問題などにより内閣改造に追い込 まれ、安倍一強体制が崩れた政府ですが、大義のない理不尽な衆院解散を決めました。野党は「脱原発」を与党との対立軸にして闘い、1日も早く、与党に代わり、脱原発を打ち出す政権を樹立すべきです。北朝鮮ミサイル問題下で危険な原発を放置し、世界中で原発建設がキャンセルされる中で原発輸出を推進する政府から、舵を取り上げなければいけません。

Manhattan Project for a Nuclear-Free World is co-organizing a contingent to oppose the extension of the US-Japan Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement, and join the Women’s March to Ban the Bomb in NYC on June 17, 2017. 

The Women’s March to Ban the Bomb (https://www.womenbanthebomb.org/) will meet at the Bryant Park around noon, and march to the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza by 4PM, so we are hoping that we meet on the steps of the NY Public Library at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue at 11:45AM, and march together with signs and banners opposing the extension of US-Japan Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement. We hope that many of you can join us. 

Regarding the US-Japan Agreement, it is about to mature in July 2018, andwill be automatically extended unless one of the countries notifies the other country six months prior to the termination date. At this time, it is very likely that the treaty will be extended.

The Japanese government says there won’t be any catastrophic damage, this time, at its nuclear facilities following Thursday night’s devastating earthquake and subsequent aftershocks.

Nine people are confirmed dead and more than 1,000 others injured after a 6.5-magnitude quake hit east of the city of Kumamoto.

The disaster revived terrifying memories of the Fukushima disaster, when a 15-meter post-quake tsunami caused a nuclear meltdown that polluted a sizeable portion of the country for decades.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga confirmed that there were no abnormalities at any nuclear facilities in the area, the Japan Times reported.

“All publicity is good publicity.” Nowhere does this specious PR maxim ring more hollow than in Fukushima Prefecture. As if the horrors of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the meltdown at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant weren’t traumatic enough, the region’s economic and agricultural recovery has been severely hampered by the reputational damage it has suffered since 3/11. If you think that’s difficult, try farming organically in Fukushima.

Falling prices and an aging agrarian population have made things tough for farmers all over Japan, but the presence of the word “Fukushima” on a supermarket label is often enough to discourage shoppers from buying produce, organic or not, grown in the area. Regardless of how far from contaminated areas it was grown — Fukushima is Japan’s third-largest prefecture — the region’s produce can’t easily shake the stigma of radiation...

Naoto Kan: 'if you love your country, let nuclear go!' - The Ecologist

Nuclear power is a uniquely hazardous technology that can destroy entire nations, Japan's prime minister at the time of the Fukushima nuclear disaster has warned British MPs. The lessons of from such catastrophes must be heeded in other countries that believe that nuclear fission can be harnessed safely, writes Linda Pentz Gunter - or they, and the world, will reap the whirlwind.

One quarter of the country's population would have had to flee if all the fuel had escaped at Fukushima. We came that close. If 50 million people had had to evacuate Japan, as a state our very survival would have been questioned.

It's widely agreed here in the rapidly Disuniting States of America that the most notorious of the Republican presidential candidates have not only abandoned, but torn up the rulebook of acceptable behavior. Lies, taunts, profanities all have become the norm.

But what if one of those candidates promised, if elected, to risk the death or permanent exile of a quarter of the country's population? That would surely evoke the well-used slur of the Right: 'unpatriotic!'

And insane, you say. Except that being certifiably unhinged doesn't seem to be a disqualifying factor in US presidential campaigns these days. Still: purposely putting your electorate at risk when other choices are open to you certainly smacks of treachery.

In the normal scheme of things, leaders of nations don't set out to deliberately wreck their countries, although arguably some have made political choices that have done precisely that.

It's therefore no coincidence that the leaders at the time of the two countries that have experienced the world's most catastrophic nuclear disasters, are fervent campaigners against any further use of nuclear energy.

They see the choice to continue with nuclear power, knowing the risk to the nation they swear an oath to protect, as tantamount to declaring war on your own country.

Former leaders during nuclear meltdowns, now oppose nuclear power

Former Soviet Premier, Mikhail Gorbachev, who led the then USSR during the April 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor explosion in Ukraine; and Naoto Kan who was prime minister of Japan when the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster began, both now travel the speakers' circuit extolling the need to abolish nuclear power.

Kan, now 69, who resigned the premiership in August 2011, has become a ubiquitous and compelling voice for the global anti-nuclear movement. Gorbachev is equally on board but, due to age and infirmity (he turns 85 on March 2nd) is less often in evidence.

Kan made his case in January during a presentation at the UK's House of Commons co-organized by Nuclear Free Local Authorities, Green Cross International (the group Gorbachev founded) and Nuclear Consulting Group. Gorbachev was scheduled but had to cancel.

Kan compared the potential worst-case devastation that could be caused by a nuclear power plant meltdown as tantamount only to "a great world war. Nothing else has the same impact."

Japan escaped such a dire fate during the Fukushima disaster, said Kan only "due to luck". But he is clearly haunted by the map his advisors showed him in the early days of the still unfolding triple meltdowns, one he screened for his London audience:

"I was shown this map with a 250km radius around Fukushima. An area home to 50 million people. One quarter of the country's population would have had to flee if all the fuel had escaped at Fukushima. We came that close. If 50 million people had had to evacuate Japan, as a state our very survival would have been questioned..."
