At least one of the reactors at Indian Point has been literally breaking apart from the inside. In March, the Indian Point 2 reactor shut down for a scheduled refueling. But what Entergy found when it conducted a first-ever inspection of the internal components of the reactor was an unprecedented level of damage.
More than 25% of the bolts that Entergy inspected--227 out of 832--which are a key part of the reactor core cooling system, have failed. Dozens of bolts had already fallen out, and now Entergy says even more broke apart while it has been making repairs.
What's worse is--federal safety regulators are preparing to let Entergy restart the reactor without conducting its own independent inspection to determine the full extent of the damage, determine the root causes, and make all of the necessary repairs.
Instead, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is letting Entergy call the shots.
Worst case scenario: The bolts and the plates they hold could fail. Cooling water can’t get to the reactor core. The reactor core melts down -- just like at Fukushima... [MORE]
