Make 2016 the Year for a Clean Energy Revolution! March with the Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent on July 24

Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free at the People's Climate March September 21, 2014

June 28, 2016
Dear Friends,
Join us on July 24 as we join thousands in the streets of Philadelphia marching for a Clean Energy Revolution!
We are forming a Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent, and we want you to join us. We will demand an end to nuclear power and fossil fuels, and a just transition to a 100% renewable energy world. We will march with thousands from coast to coast on the eve of the Democratic National Convention, calling on all of our political leaders to take immediate action.
Let us know you plan to come by filling in the short form below.
You can find out more at the March for a Clean Energy Revolution website. There is information about transportation and lodging options, including over two dozen buses being organized from cities throughout the east coast and the Midwest.

The Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent facebook page has updates on the march and where to find us in Philadelphia. You can use the page to invite your friends to join us, as well.
For those able to make a weekend of it in Philadelphia, there is even more happening on Saturday, July 23:
  • The Summit for a Clean Energy Revolution: workshops and speeches from national leaders, grassroots heroes, and frontline organizers on how to build the movement.
  • PowerShift 2016: the conference for young climate activists to learn, network, share skills, and build the next generation of leadership.
  • Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free meeting: meet with anti-nuclear and -uranium activists as we make plans for 2017 and beyond (details TBA, contact Tim Judson for more info).
If you can't make it and/or would like to help more people attend, please make a donation to support the Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free contingent. We are making hundreds of signs and banners to get our message.
Funds raised will also help First Nations and anti-uranium activists make the trip to Philadelphia. Nuclear power is dirty from the start, from the radioactive and toxic mining and processing of uraniumto over 15,000 abandoned mines affecting Native American and rural communities throughout the Western US and Canada.

BERLIN URANIUM FILM FESTIVAL STARTS SEPTEMBER 28

FROM RIO TO HOLLYWOOD AND BERLIN

50 years Palomares, 30 years Chernobyl, 5 years Fukushima: In April the Uranium Film Festival was for the first time guest in Hollywood’s famous Raleigh Studios, in May it showed 49 international atomic films at the Modern Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro, and now at the end of September the International Uranium Film Festival comes back to Berlin.
From September 28th to October 2nd the in the world unique film festival will show movies and documentaries from around the world about nuclear power, uranium mining and radioactive hazards: from atomic waste to uranium ammunition. The festival will particularly remember the atomic disasters of Fukushima, Chernobyl and the nearly unknown nuclear accident of Palomares: On 17 January 1966 an B-52 bomber of the US collided with a tanker plane during mid-air refuelling over  Almeria in Southern Spain. The B-52 with four hydrogen bombs on board broke apart and exploded. The atomic bombs dropped over Palomares. See New York Times report: Even Without Detonation, 4 Hydrogen Bombs From ’66 Scar Spanish Village(link is external)
The 2010 in Rio de Janeiro founded Uranium Film Festival is now in its sixth successful year and shows great movies about nuclear power and nuclear threats from around the world.  "The Uranium Film Festival is unique in that it tries to make this complex subject accessible to all. Films from around the world, film discussions and roundtables with experts deal with uranium mining, nuclear reactor disasters and the dangers of nuclear radioactive waste that has to be stored safely for thousands of years", says Jörg Sommer, Chairman of the German environmental Foundation and patron of the Uranium Film Festival in Berlin together with MP Klaus Mindrup and Casting Agent Uwe Buenker.
The festival in Berlin will take place in the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg from 28 September to 2 October 2016. 50 years Palomares, 30 years Chernobyl, 5 years Fukushima: Nuclear disasters shall not be forgotten. The festival welcomes any donation.

Diablo Shutdown Marks End of Atomic Era | Shut it down NOW!

Diablo Shutdown Marks End of Atomic Era | Harvey Wasserman | Ecowatch
As worldwide headlines have proclaimed, California’s Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) says it will shut its giant Diablo Canyon reactors near San Luis Obispo, and that the power they’ve been producing will be replaced by renewable energy.
PG&E has also earmarked some $350 million to “retain and retrain” Diablo’s workforce, whose union has signed on to the deal, which was crafted in large part by major environmental groups.
On a global scale, in many important ways, this marks the highest profile step yet towards the death of U.S. nuclear power and a national transition to a Solartopian green-powered planet...

--- Shut it down NOW!

they say that they will shut Diablo Canyon, but not for another 9 years. that is 9 years too long, 9 more years of unacceptable risk.

"... Is this a clever move by PG&E announcing the closure of Diablo in 2024 & 2025 to prevent the Lands Commission from insisting on prohibiting once through cooling? which if they were legally and rightfully ruled against would mean the closure of Diablo by 2018 ... any WE WON'T BE FOOLED! This June 28th California State Lands Commission meeting is still very important and may be a chance to get the Devil shut down earlier. Nine years is a very long time! Here's their website w/ detailed itinerary http://www.marchforenvironmentalhope.org/

here's a quote from Tim Judson, NIRS on that march:

"This march Shellenberger and Co. are planning on Friday is now an act of absurdity. The targets for renewables and efficiency in the agreement could definitely be achieved and exceeded well before 2024, and they should be. But the fact that PG&E signed onto an agreement to replace a large nuclear power plant with renewables and efficiency, and acknowledges that nuclear reactors are going to be an obstacle is hugely significant.

"As is the fact that PG&E has entered into a just transition plan, to minimize the impact on workers and community and prepare for decommissioning. Utilities are using the threats of layoffs and economic devastation to extort huge subsidies to prop up reactors all over the country. The agreement puts an end to that, and sets a precedent for the rest of the country."

Fukushima Scandal; What IS A Meltdown? | SimplyInfo

TEPCO_fukushima_press_conference_bowingThe recent TEPCO investigation into events during the early phase of the Fukushima Disaster raised a few questions. TEPCO claims they were told by the Prime Minister’s office not to use the word “meltdown”, something the former Prime Minister denies.
A TEPCO official was stopped from uttering the word at a press conference and NISA staff were sacked for mentioning a meltdown to the press. Yet TEPCO is insisting they didn’t hide anything because they provided radiation data and other related information. TEPCO used the phrase “core damage” until May of 2011. Up until May their computer simulations only showed 25-55% fuel as being melted. It is worth noting that computer models are only as good as the data input to run them so what TEPCO put in impacted the result. TEPCO’s own manuals that had been “missing” until a few weeks ago cite anything more than 5% melting is a meltdown. But what actually constitutes a meltdown?

ATTEND THE CALIFORNIA STATE LANDS COMMISSION SIMULCAST MEETING re: DIABLO CANYON NUKE PLANT
MORRO BAY COMMUNITY CENTER
1001 KENNEDY WAY, MORRO BAY
RALLY AT 9:00am! TUES, JUN 28th followed by SIMULCAST MTG @10am
Bring: signs, your voice, and everybody you know. There will be music and an open mic. SPEAK OUT!

LIVE State Lands Commission meeting 10:00am

SACRAMENTO ... 100 Howe St., Sacramento

This could be the meeting that leads to the shutdown of PG&E's decrepit Diablo Canyon nuke plant.

Tell the California State Lands Commission we want a complete environmental review of the entire project under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) before any new lease is considered!

Please SHARE and INVITE your friends!!!

Background information:
• The current leases for the tidelands at Diablo expire in 2018 and 2019.
• It is the use of tidelands that allows PG&E to take in 2.4 billion gallons of water each day to cool the reactors.
• No environmental study of the effects of using the tidelands to exchange ocean water to cool Diablo has ever been done. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) provides for such a study.
• CEQA and the public trust doctrine will legally require assessment of more than just the impacts on the tidal lands: essentially, all effects on the environment associated with a significant extension of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant's (DCNPP’s) life.

SHUT DOWN NOT MELTDOWN!

ACTION ALERT! ... please email the California Lands Commission prior to the meeting whether you are attending or not! ... I hope everyone who reads this, will copy it and "paste" into an 'e-mail, sign it, and immediately send it to the State Lands Commission
EMAIL: CSLC.CommissionMeetings@slc.ca.gov.

On June 28th of this month, The California State Lands Commission will decide whether or not to require a full California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) review and Environmental Impact Report (EIR) before considering the renewal of State tidelands at the Diablo Canyon nuclear facility, owned and operated by PG&E. The leases on the tidelands are due to expire in 2018 and 2019.
Under current State law, the Lands Commission must perform an EIR to determine the health of the tidal wetlands under its jurisdiction. The Diablo Canyon reactors pull 2.5 billion gallons of seawater every day. This system, called once-through cooling, does significant damage to marine ecosystems. Biologists have estimated that Diablo Canyon sucks in more than 1.5 billion fish larvae a year, and none survive.
The State of California has already ruled that all coastal power plants must reduce seawater intake by over 90%. The risk of earthquake has also become clear since the Fukushima disaster, and PG&E has failed to report, after more than 5 years, if this nuclear facility can withstand the new .75 G standard.
Thank you!

EDITORIAL: Extent of TEPCO cover-up over meltdown must be clarified:The Asahi Shimbun

A panel investigating Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s response to the triple meltdown during the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster revealed an unpardonable breach of trust by the operator of the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
But there is still a lot more work to be done by the panel to uncover the full scope of the utility’s apparent meltdown cover-up.
Immediately after the catastrophic accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant, then TEPCO President Masataka Shimizu instructed employees not to use the term “meltdown,” leading to a delay in the official announcement, according to a report compiled by the investigation panel commissioned by the company.
A reactor meltdown, or the melting of nuclear fuel in the core of a reactor, is about as bad as it gets.
The panel’s report suggests that in the middle of this unprecedented nuclear disaster the top official of the plant operator was trying to conceal the severity of what was unfolding from the public, including people living in areas around the plant.
For four long years, TEPCO kept giving false explanations about the delay in the announcement of the reactor meltdowns to Niigata Prefecture, which was demanding the truth of what happened. The company claimed it did not have the criteria for defining and determining a meltdown. The firm also said no in-house instruction was given to employees telling them not to use the term...

EPA PROPOSES SHOCKING THOUSAND-FOLD INCREASE IN RADIOACTIVITY ALLOWED IN DRINKING WATER via Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) –

Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, the U.S. EPA quietly issued proposals to allow radioactive contamination in drinking water at concentrations vastly greater than allowed under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The new guidance would permit radiation exposures equivalent to 250 chest X-rays a year. Today, environmental groups called the proposal “shocking” and “egregious...”

Nuclear Industry Worldwide Faces Escalating Battle to Keep Aging Reactors Running

Life extensions to nuclear plants in Europe and North America are repeatedly being granted by safety regulators. But, according to nuclear plant owners, 25 percent of parts are now obsolete, so keeping the reactors going is becoming an increasing problem as components wear out...

Radiation risks are based on irrelevant comparisons | Letters to the editor | stltoday.com

When it comes to protecting pregnancy and childhood, many of the reassurances proffered by those interviewed are based on irrelevant comparisons. Comparisons to medical procedures are irrelevant because pregnant women are shielded when given X-rays and most children are not exposed to medical radiation. Also irrelevant is any use of International Commission on Radiological Protection calculations. The commission lacks outside oversight and participation, particularly from early life stage and developmental disciplines concerned with healthy pregnancy outcomes and child wellness.

Tell NRC: Keep Indian Point Shut Down!

At least one of the reactors at Indian Point has been literally breaking apart from the inside. In March, the Indian Point 2 reactor shut down for a scheduled refueling. But what Entergy found when it conducted a first-ever inspection of the internal components of the reactor was an unprecedented level of damage.
More than 25% of the bolts that Entergy inspected--227 out of 832--which are a key part of the reactor core cooling system, have failed. Dozens of bolts had already fallen out, and now Entergy says even more broke apart while it has been making repairs.
What's worse is--federal safety regulators are preparing to let Entergy restart the reactor without conducting its own independent inspection to determine the full extent of the damage, determine the root causes, and make all of the necessary repairs.
Instead, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is letting Entergy call the shots.

Worst case scenario: The bolts and the plates they hold could fail. Cooling water can’t get to the reactor core. The reactor core melts down -- just like at Fukushima... [MORE]
