Don't Nuke the Climate!

NIRS' executive director Tim Judson talks about the importance of the international Don't Nuke the Climate campaign, which is educating, organizing and mobilizing for adoption of a nuclear-free, carbon-free energy strategy at the COP 21 climate negotiations in Paris in December 2015.

Don't Nuke the Climate!

This December, leaders from nearly every nation in the world will converge on Paris, France, for the COP 21 climate talks. These negotiations are critical for the world's future: the strongest and most effective possible response to our climate crisis is a necessity. We have no time, nor resources, to waste on expensive, dangerous and counterproductive "solutions"--like nuclear power. Instead, we need to build, as quickly as possible, the nuclear-free, carbon-free energy system our planet needs and deserves.

Despite the claims of its proponents--who stand to make billions of dollars if a nuclear non-solution is chosen--for a myriad of reasons nuclear power is not only ineffective at addressing climate and achieving meaningful carbon reductions, it is actually counterproductive. Its widespread use would prevent the necessary deployment of clean, safe and affordable renewable energy, coupled with energy storage and a modern 21st century grid, that can and will power our future.

In 2000, the nuclear power industry attempted at the COP 6 conference to obtain recognition under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism. We defeated them.

We plan to do the same in 2015, as the nuclear industry revs up to try again. In June, seven international organizations: Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS, US), World Information Service on Energy--Amsterdam (WISE), Ecodefense (Russia), Reseau Sortir du Nucleaire (France),  Global 2000 (Austria), WECF (Germany), and Germany’s Burgerinitiative Umweltschutz, joined together to form the Don't Nuke the Climate Campaign to achieve these goals.

We are educating, organizing and mobilizing across the globe. We will be inside the halls of the COP 21 building, we will be outside in the streets.

Your support now will help us bring the largest and most visible Nuclear-Free Carbon-Free message to Paris possible. We are printing thousands of flags, giant banners, and more to make that message clear to the world's leaders. Our petition, already signed by more than 400 organizations across the globe, will be handed directly to world leaders. And, most importantly, your support will help ensure that thousands of activists are able to attend.
