10.29-11.1 MONROE, MI: Interventions against proposed Fermi 3 atomic reactor in Michigan to be heard at Halloween-time

At Halloween-time, an environmental coalition, represented by Toledo-based attorney Terry Lodge, will finally get its day in court, after more than five years of resisting Detroit Edison's (DTE) proposed new Fermi 3 atomic reactor targeted at the Lake Erie shoreline of Monroe County, Michigan.
However, few, if any, nuclear license applications have ever been rejected by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), or the agency's Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB) over the past several decades.
Monroe has already "hosted" Fermi 1 (an experimental plutonium breeder reactor, permanently shutdown in 1972, but still undergoing decommissioning, which had a partial core meltdown on Oct. 5, 1966, as documented in John G. Fuller's classic bookWe Almost Lost Detroit). Monroe still "hosts" Fermi 2, at 1,122 Megawatts-electric (MW-e), the single-biggest General Electric Mark I Boiling Water Reactor (GE BWR Mark I) in the world, almost as big as the identically-designed, exploded, and melted down Fukushima Daiichi Units 1 and 2 put together.
DTE submitted its combined Construction and Operating License Application (COLA) for Fermi 3 in September 2008. The nuclear utility had raced to file its COLA, in order to be among the first in line for billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded subsidies for proposed new reactors enacted by George W. Bush in 2005.
But the ESBWR (General Electric-Hitachi so-called "Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor") design was so half-baked, NRC couldn't help but respond during the ESBWR design certification review with an astonishing several thousand Requests for Additional Information (RAIs). Not surprisingly, the dubious ESBWR design has been abandoned by several other U.S. nuclear utilities. But DTE is stubborn.
The environmental coalition, which includes Beyond Nuclear, Citizens for Alternatives to Chemical Contamination (CACC), Citizen Environment Alliance of Southwestern Ontario (CEA), Don't Waste Michigan, and Sierra Club Michigan Chapter, filed intervention contentions and petitioned for hearings by NRC's arbitrarily short deadline on March 9, 2009.
Of some 30 contentions filed by the coalition, four have survived five years of NRC staff and DTE legal attacks. However, the environmental resistance has caused three and half years of delays in DTE's original Fermi 3 schedule.
One of the surviving contentions, regarding the NRC's court-ordered environmental impact statement (EIS) on the agency's high-level radioactive waste (HLRW) "confidence," has officially delayed finalization of NRC's rubberstamp of DTE's Fermi 3 COLA by at least two years, the time it will take to finalize the EIS.
Another contention demands that NRC include an assessment for 29 miles of transmission line corridor construction that would be needed to connect Fermi 3 to the electrical grid. Some of that construction would be through fragile forested wetlands, habitat for threatened and even endangered species, including the Eastern Fox Snake. This contention is being held in abeyance until the NRC Commission rules on the matter.
The other two remaining contentions are the subject matter to be litigated during the upcoming Halloween-time NRC ASLB hearings to be held in Monroe.
The first concerns the threatened Eastern Fox Snake species, an indigenous constrictor. A large area of the endangered habitat of the Eastern Fox Snake -- coastal Great Lakes wetlands -- would be destroyed by the construction and operation of Fermi 3. In fact, the State has admitted that Fermi 3 would involve the largest impact on Great Lakes coastal wetlands in the history of applicable state environmental protection laws.
The second contention regards the largely to entirely non-existent quality assurance (QA) on the entire Fermi 3 COLA. The environmental coalition is represented on this QA contention by Arnie Gundersen, Chief Engineer at Fairewinds Associates, Inc.
This QA contention interacts with the vital subject: Fermi 3's soil structures analysis. Under conventional soil structure analysis Fermi 3's foundations would require as much concrete as the rest of construction of Fermi 3, essentially doubling the concrete needed, at astronomical expense. DTE is attempting to take major short cuts to avoid that cost with alternative soil structure analysis, modified subtraction, and semi-modified subtraction.
Michael Keegan of Don't Waste Michigan, the intervening environmental coalition's coordinator, has written about the upcoming hearings:
"The culmination of 7 years of vigilance on the proposed Fermi 3 nuclear power plant will occurOctober 29 through November 1, in Monroe. Nuclear Engineer Arnold Gundersen will be serving as our Expert Witness and the lack of Quality Assurance should prove to be the death knell for this Fiasco 3.
Now that the government is going back to work the Hearings on the proposed Fermi 3 will be held.
Limited Oral and Written comment will be taken but the public must pre-register. DTE is already lining up local community leaders and associations to come out and speak in support.  They are following the same Thanksgiving Dinner Template as they did on the FEIS process [Final Environmental Impact Statement, for which public comment meetings were held].
[Please click this link for] excerpts with Instruction. This Hearing is the culmination of having brought forward 30 Contentions before the Atomic Safety Licensing Board.  Please turn out to send the message that there is strong opposition to the proposed Fermi 3 nuclear power plant.
Thank you.
Michael J. Keegan, Don't Waste Michigan/Fermi 3 Intervenor
Registration Required:  To be considered timely, a written request to make an oral statement must either be mailed, faxed, or sent by e-mail so as to be received by 5:00 PM EDT on Friday,October 18, 2013.  'How-to' info. [is provided at this link], but I am thinking that because of gov't shutdown, we'll be able to get a few [extra] days [added onto that deadline]."

10.30 MONROE, MI: All Species Mutant Rally to Halt Fermi 3

Are you aware that DTE wants to build another nuclear reactor in Monroe called Fermi 3?

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be holding hearings on whether or not to build Fermi 3 on Devil's Night & Halloween, how appropriate...

We already have Fermi 2 (which is not functioning properly and has nearly melted down in the past). And, hello, did DTE and our government totally forget about the ongoing disaster at Fukushima?

Fermi 3 would be an experimental, $20 billion health hazard. Plus, MI doesn't even need the energy it would provide! If you are against this failed technology, please come out and show your support.

WE NEED YOU! This is a critical time in their decision making process. The only thing holding them back from building this thing are the people's voices.

Put on a costume and join us for a Mutant Rally on Wednesday, Oct. 30th. Bring anti-nuclear signs and props. Themes: We are being irradiated by nuclear energy & Fermi 3 is a terrible idea. The more green ooze (aka radioactive waste) you can incorporate into your outfit, the better. Two-headed dandelions, fish, baby dolls, etc. are also very appropriate. ...Radiation is scary.

Coffee & pastries will be provided for those who would like to sit in on the hearings on the 30th & 31st from 8:30-9:20 am before the hearings begin at 9:30 am.

Mutant Rally on Wed., the 30th at 4 pm. That's when we'll need your support to show DTE, NRC, and our government: Fermi 3 is a gamble we can't afford.

Global Solidarity for Fukushima | DiaNuke.org

Let’s raise alarm on the deepening crisis in Fukushima: a call for global solidarity
Join the Hydrangea protests by fasting every Friday.
Prepare for the upcoming ‘Fukushima is Here’ global event.
Raise awareness about Fukushima in your community.
Think what you can do at your own level to raise voice.
Join others locally/virtually to coordinate a chain of protest actions
Dear Friends,
Fukushima is far from being over. It is getting worse. With thousands of tonnes of highly radioactive water threatening to contaminate the Pacific ocean and even topple the crippled reactor, and 1400 tonnes of lethal spent fuel lying atop reactor no.4, Fukushima today is one of the biggest challenges humanity is faced with. The ongoing accident has not only proved nuclear safety an oxymoron, but has also highlighted the complacency, inefficiency and callousness of the industry-government nexus in a country like Japan which is regarded as very advanced – both in terms of technology and management. Such cover ups, denials, and unaccountability are not confined to Japan, but communities facing the radiation hazards along the entire nuclear chain have experienced it in every country of the world that has adopted this technology.
While the crisis in Fukushima aggravates, we are also witnessing an attitude among the governments and nuclear promoter agencies like the IAEA to reverse the lessons of Fukushima and the upsurge of popular disapproval that the accident had generated initially. The nuclear establishments everywhere are trying to manufacture a sense of normalcy, nuclear industry is busy projecting fictitious claims of nuclear renaissance, and the corporate media has resumed repeating its old pro-nuclear cliche’s. However, concerned citizens and the presently/potentially affected communities are protesting despite all efforts to gag such voices. Massive protests have recently forced the governments to abandon nuclear plans and shut down reactors in the US and China, while Taiwan is heading for a popular referendum on nuclear power. Common people in India, mostly farmers, fisherfolk and tribals are bravely facing brutalstate repression for their peaceful movements against nuclear projects that stand to threaten their safety and livelihoods.
A coordinated international protest is required today to highlight the worsening situation in Fukushima and to raise awareness about the catastrophe’s lessons. We all need to raise our voices together to demand an end to nuclear insanity. We should learn from the experiences of horizontal mobilisations in the recent years and start a chain of imaginative actions at personal and collective levels.
We, some self-motivated friends, from US, Canada, France, Australia, Belgiumand other countries are willing to do some actions. Linked through human connectedness and our concerns for a safe, sustainable, equatable and better world, are starting a fast every Friday starting week in solidarity with the hydrangea ongoing Fridays in Japan where friends have been protesting and praying for a nuclear free world. We are doing this to raise awareness in our own countries and to underline the shared concern. We have been following the unfolding catastrophe in Fukushima since the beginning and it has made us realise the value of shared dreams and struggles to save our planet.
We would observe fast on Friday and would try reaching out to people through various means that we hope to experiment with and learn along our way. We would urge others also to expand this chain and initiate their own imaginative actions according to their convenience and local contexts.
Here are some tentative actions that we have thought, to make this initiative more effective:
- collect solidarity message for Fukushima in our communities and send them to friends in Japan.
- prepare information brochures/pamphlets on Fukushima and distribute it while we are on fast.
- put up photo exhibition on Fukushima on the venue where we observe our fast. Friends can choose any public/cultural/religious place to observe the fast.
- the Friday fasts can be continued for any length decided by friends according to their own convenience, capacity or local social/political context
- we would jointly and independently share our experiences and urge others to join, share their suggestions and solidarities.
This is an open call from our hearts, to rise up and speak out about Fukushima. We understand that actions like these can only sustain and succeed if there is flexibility and space for everybody to improvise and take forward the chain.

10.19 SF: #Fukushima Is Here

Please Join us for a day of recognition: Radioactive contamination from Fukushima threatens life everywhere... And it will for generations to come.

The nuclear reactors that exploded in Japan pose a terrible problem: to keep the escaped corium from bursting into uncontrollable fire or bigger explosions, incredible amounts of water must be poured into a damaged and very radioactive site. The plant has always had a problem mitigating heavy groundwater seepage; now it's swamped with highly contaminated water from both sources, making the ground that supports the site soggy and unstable.

This nuclear emergency is not over.

The world is a round planet and the nuclear fires burning in these destroyed reactors will not be extinguished for centuries. Dangerous levels of radioactive contamination have leaked into the Pacific Ocean, into our rain, into our food chain, into the very fabric of our DNA gene pool, every day for two and a half years.

We have seriously fouled our nest, folks, and it's time to start talking about it.

We are all connected by bodies of water and we are mostly made up of water. We have one globally connected ocean and each of us has one body. All life was born in this ocean. It needs our help now, to tell others what we know.

One ocean, One chance.

Fukushima is Here.

8.20 PHOENIX - Protest Against Canyon Uranium Mine *** CANCELLED ***

*** CANCELLED ***

UPDATE:
via MamaBears AgainstNukes -
AUG 20 PHX DEMO CANCELED!
Dear all,
Unfortunately, the judge in this case has decided to rule on the injunction against the Canyon uranium mine WITHOUT a public hearing. The court hearing in Phoenix on Tuesday, Aug. 20 has
been canceled!! JUDGE CAMPBELL WILL RULE ON THE WRITTEN DOCUMENTS ALONE, WITHOUT HEARING THE ORAL ARGUMENTS. Please note that we are also canceling the DEMO, since nothing is happening in Phoenix that day. Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who supported the organizing of this event! We do not know when he will issue his ruling. We will keep you posted on developments!

Come Join Us to Protest in Phoenix at the Federal Courthouse to Temporarily Stop the Canyon Uranium Mine! Kaibab National Forest Supervisor Mike Williams illegally allowed Canada-based Energy Fuels to begin digging a uranium mine 15 miles south of the Grand Canyon with no review whatsoever of the 27-year-old Environmental Impact Statement, despite volumes and volumes of new evidence that so-called "low level" radiation from uranium KILLS!

Mike Williams also ignored regulations in the National EnvironmentalProtection Act (NEPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), requiring them to consult with tribes when a sacred area, a traditional cultural property, has been designated, as at Red Butte, and they are ignoring new evidence that the uranium mine will inevitably contaminate the massive aquifer that feeds the Colorado River and its many springs. NEW EVIDENCE PROVES that Radioactive uranium causes cancers, birth defects and DNA mutations. Once released into the environment it goes on radiating whatever it gets into for billions of years - in other words: FOREVER!

The aquifers on the Navajo Reservation, and creeks within the Grand Canyon National Park, have already been poisoned by past uranium mining. NO MORE! The Colorado River is the lifeblood of the West. The federal court in the person of Judge Campbell will hear oral arguments for an injunction to stop the uranium mine, being brought by the Havasupai Tribe, the Grand Canyon trust, the Sierra Club, and the Center for Biological Diversity. PLEASE SHARE THIS EVENT WITH YOUR FRIENDS!

5.1 MAYDAY NO NUKES COVERGENCE | Japan - Fissures in the Planetary Apparatus

Abolish Irradiated Labor Everywhere!

MayDay No Nukes Convergence

Wednesday May 1st 2013 4PM @ Union Square
(Gather at Northwest corner / look for the hazmat bloc)
Contact: info@jfissures.org  or 917-746-5735

Fukushima Nuclear Disaster in 2011 shed light on the working conditions in all nuclear industries around the world. At the crippled power plant in Fukushima, Japan, thousands of workers are still working to contain the damage, while being exposed to high levels of radiation. The current labor conditions and cover-ups give little protection for the health of the hundreds of thousands of workers. We call for a solidarity with irradiated workers everywhere and for abolition of nuclear energy and weaponry that is built upon the sacrifice of human lives.Irradiated labor has expanded into people’s everyday life near the Fukushima plant due to the State negligence and TEPCO’s negligence.  Mothers, fathers are standing up to protect lives of the children, and the young people are raising voice to protect the future.
This May Day, join us and put on a hazmat suit to imagine the invisible radiation.

No Heroes.

No Robots.

No Guineapigs.

No Nukes.
