August 6 March for Nuclear Abolition & Global Survival • Livermore Lab • Livermore, CA

Mark your calendar today for this major Rally, March and Nonviolent Direct Action on Monday, August 6th. Join us to commemorate the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan at the site where new nuclear weapons are being developed for use today.

We will gather at Livermore Lab to stop the creation of novel, “more usable” nuclear warheads that the Trump Administration proposed in its Nuclear Posture Review and fiscal 2019 budget, both released earlier this year. We will join millions of peace advocates around the country and the world on this memorable day to say “never again” to the use of nuclear weapons – and to call for their global abolition. Our keynote speaker will be Daniel Ellsberg, perhaps best known as the whistleblower who released “The Pentagon Papers” to hasten an end to the war in Vietnam. He has been an analyst at RAND Corp. and a consultant to the Defense Dept., specializing in problems of command and control of nuclear weapons, war plans and crisis decision-making. Ellsberg recently released his critically acclaimed memoirs, The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner…

Daniel Ellsberg: Preventing Extermination Of Humanity By Nukes | August 6, 2018 Hiroshima-Nagasaki Action at Livermore Lab 8 AM

"…The chart in my book, which I reproduce from memory—a very simple chart. I’m sure I have it right. [The chart] indicated that they expected to kill with our own first strike some 325 million people in the U.S.S.R. and China. Since they had an answer to that so quickly, they clearly had a model to go on, and I asked for how many would be killed altogether. And that figure added up to 600 million, a hundred Holocausts as I saw it."

DANIEL ELLSBERG ON A LIFE DEDICATED TO PREVENTING NUCLEAR ATTACK THAT WOULD RESULT IN NEAR-EXTINCTION OF HUMANS

podcast ---- Click here to LISTEN! – Daniel Ellsberg is best known as the whistleblower who released the Pentagon Papers, which exposed what United States government officials really knew and thought about the Vietnam War. But he also worked as a nuclear war planner when he was a RAND Corporation researcher and consultant for the Defense Department.

In a recently published book, “Doomsday Machine: Confessions Of a Nuclear War Planner,” Ellsberg recounts his journey as he discovered how close a nuclear strike by the United States government or a war between the U.S. and Soviet government could bring the Earth’s population to near-extinction.

From the late 1950s to the 1960s, he uncovered several traits of U.S. nuclear war plans that would produce quite devastating results for humanity. He attempted to persuade U.S. officials to address them and achieved rather mixed results.

On the “Unauthorized Disclosure” weekly podcast, Ellsberg highlights how he came to learn the military’s estimate for how many hundreds of millions of people would die if a nuclear attack was launched. He describes how there was no way to call back pilots if an execute order was given. He shares how his father refused to be part of the production of the H-bomb and talks about how he had classified documents on nuclear matters, which he planned to release until they were tragically lost.

August 9, 2016 Action at Livermore Lab 8 AM

On Tuesday, August 9, 2016, participants will gather at the northwest corner of the Livermore Lab (Vasco Road and Patterson Pass Road in Livermore). The program will begin at 8:00 AM.

A Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivor) speaker has been invited. Expect great speakers, music, drummers, art and hundreds of peace advocates. Together, we will commemorate the past and change the future. More than 16,000 nuclear weapons in the world today continue to pose an unacceptable threat to life on Earth, and we will call for their abolition.

At 8:15 AM, there will be a solemn moment of silence to honor radiation victims worldwide. The U.S. dropped the first nuclear bomb used in war on Hiroshima at 8:15 AM local time, August 6, 1945.

Immediately following the program will be a "call to action," in which participants will be invited to march a short distance to the Livermore Lab West Gate. Those who choose will nonviolently risk arrest. Others will conduct a legal witness and support.

This event is co-sponsored by the Livermore Conversion Project, Tri-Valley CAREs, Ecumenical Peace Institute, Western States Legal Foundation, No Nukes Action, Asian Americans for Peace and Justice, American Friends Service Committee, Jane Addams Peace Association, Peace Action West, Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center, and others. For more information, contact Tri-Valley CAREs at 925-443-7148.

TVC Supports Marshall Islands Lawsuit Against US with Legal Brief | Tri-Valley CAREs

The "Baker" explosion, part of Operation Crossroads, a nuclear weapon test by the United States military at Bikini Atoll, Micronesia, on 25 July 1946.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Operation_Crossroads_Baker_Edit.jpg

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) yesterday continued its efforts to compel the United States government to comply with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), asking a Federal Court judge to reject the U.S. government's claim that the treaty cannot be enforced.

On April 24, 2014, the Marshall Islands filed a lawsuit in U.S. Federal Court, alleging the United States has violated its moral and legal obligations under the NPT by refusing to negotiate in good faith toward complete nuclear disarmament.

On July 21, the U.S. responded to these allegations by filing a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the issue of U.S. compliance with the treaty is not subject to the Court's jurisdiction.

Yesterday, the RMI filed an Opposition to the U.S. motion to dismiss, explaining why the Court cannot and should not look the other way.

The brief explains, among other points, that RMI is not asking the Court to decide whether the United States should enter into the NPT, or whether the NPT is a good or a bad treaty for the United States. Instead, the Marshall Islands makes the legally grounded argument that while the Non-Proliferation Treaty is in effect and the U.S. is a party to it, there is no choice but for the U.S. to comply with it.

Additionally, the brief points to prior rulings in U.S. courts make it clear that it is the courts that determine compliance with the law, not the Executive. It points out that the U.S. Constitution says "ALL" treaties are the supreme law of this nation, not just some treaties, or the treaties the current President happens to prefer at any particular time. The NPT is a treaty, and under the plain language of our Constitution, the federal courts are charged with interpreting it, and resolving disputes involving it, such as this dispute.

Tri-Valley CAREs was called upon to file an Amicus Curiae brief regarding the proper venue in federal court. The RMI wishes to have the case heard in the Northern District of California, home to significant nuclear weapons research and development at Livermore Lab. However, the Government's Motion to Dismiss alleged that the nuclear weapons work at the Lab was tangentially related to NPT compliance and argued that the case should be dismissed for lack of venue, or in the alternative, be moved to Washington DC District Court. Tri-Valley CAREs brief describes the significant nuclear weapons work being done at Livermore and the legal basis for maintaining venue in the Northern District of Califonia as preferred by the RMI.

The RMI was used as the testing ground for 67 nuclear tests conducted by the United States from 1946 to 1958. These tests - equivalent to 1.7 Hiroshima bombs being exploded daily for 12 years - resulted in lasting health and environmental problems for the Marshall Islanders. The RMI Nuclear Zero lawsuit against the U.S. seeks no compensation, but rather, seeks action to commence and conclude negotiations for complete nuclear disarmament by 2020, thus ending the nuclear weapons threat for all humanity, now and in the future.

Tony de Brum, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Marshall Islands, emphasizes that the Marshallese people "have suffered the catastrophic and irreparable damage of these weapons, and we vow to fight so that no one else on earth will ever again experience these atrocities."

8.6 Hiroshima Commemoration and Action at Livermore Lab

Theme this year is "Unfinished Business and Our Most Urgent Responsibility; Banning the Bomb at the Livermore Lab and Globally." We will gather at the northwest corner of the Lab (Vasco Road and Patterson Pass Road in Livermore) on Tue, August 6, at 7am.

Update: Keynote speaker is Daniel Ellsberg!

Sixty-eight years after the United States dropped atomic bombs on the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, the threat of nuclear annihilation remains. Nuclear devastation could come by accident, miscalculation, madness or malevolent intent. Events like Fukushima demonstrate the dangers of nuclear technologies derived from the bomb. And, while instructions on how to “duck and cover” to survive a nuclear bomb may seem quaint, modern propaganda still blinds many to our most urgent and unfinished business: the total abolition of nuclear weapons.

We ask all who seek peace and justice to come to Livermore Lab on August 6 for a rally with musicians, speakers, Taiko drummers and more. Immediately following will be a short march and nonviolent direct action at the West Gate. We will gather at the location where U.S. nuclear weapons scientists are developing the world’s first so-‐called “interoperable” warhead to deliver annihilation interchangeably from land or sea. Those who choose will peacefully risk arrest, while others will provide legal witness and support.

Initial sponsors include American Friends Service Committee, Asian Americans for Peace and Justice, Ecumenical Peace Institute, Livermore Conversion Project, Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center, No Nukes Action Committee, Peace Action West, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Bay Area Chapter, Tri-Valley CAREs, and Western States Legal Foundation.
