Abandoned Uranium Mining Clean Up Campaign to be Announced on Earth Day

Rapid City, South Dakota — Defenders of Black Hills and Clean Up The Mines are hosting an Earth Day media event to announce a nationwide campaign for clean up of all abandoned uranium mines in the United States.

More than 10,000 abandoned uranium mines (AUMs) are located throughout the US, primarily in the Western States, and more than 10 million people live within a 50 mile radius of an abandoned uranium mine.

“These hazardous abandoned uranium mines poison our air, land and water. The health effects are tremendous.” says Charmaine White Face, a volunteer with Clean Up The Mines and member of Defenders of Black Hills. “Currently no laws require clean up of these dangerous abandoned uranium mines. We are letting Congress know; it’s time to clean up the mines!” says Ms. White Face.

“A private abandoned, open pit uranium mine about 200 meters from an elementary school in Ludlow, South Dakota, emits 1770 microRems per hour, more than 4 times as much as is being emitted in many locations evacuated long term as a result of contamination by the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster in Japan,” said Nuclear Health Professor Kim Kearfott, Ph. D., University of Michigan.

South Dakota has at least 272 abandoned open-pit uranium mines. There are 169 AUMs located in the southwestern Black Hills and 103 in the northwest corner near Buffalo, SD. The Northern Great Plains Region of Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota contains more than 2,000 plus AUMs.

What: Earth Day media event to announce a national campaign for clean up of all abandoned uranium mines in the United States.

A potluck lunch will follow the event, weather permitting.

When: 10:00 AM (MST), Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
Plan on arriving at 9:30 and bring your own chairs.

Where: Cheyenne River bridge on SD Highway 40, located  15 miles southeast of Hermosa, SD

Who: Defenders of Black Hills, Popular Resistance, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and Veterans for Peace. Oglala Sioux and other Tribal officials are also invited to the event as Cheyenne River contamination impacts Red Shirt Village which is on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Visuals: Colorful banners, and signs saying, “Warning!  Radioactive River” will be placed near the bridge to address the radioactive contamination of the Cheyenne River.

Clean Up The Mines (www.cleanupthemines.org) is a campaign to pass legislation through congress to ensure clean up of hazardous abandoned uranium mines throughout the US.

Defenders of the Black Hills (www.defendblackhills.org) is a group of volunteers without racial or tribal boundaries whose mission is to preserve, protect, and restore the area of the 1851 and 1868 Treaties made between the United States and the Great Sioux Nation.

8.20 PHOENIX - Protest Against Canyon Uranium Mine *** CANCELLED ***

*** CANCELLED ***

UPDATE:
via MamaBears AgainstNukes -
AUG 20 PHX DEMO CANCELED!
Dear all,
Unfortunately, the judge in this case has decided to rule on the injunction against the Canyon uranium mine WITHOUT a public hearing. The court hearing in Phoenix on Tuesday, Aug. 20 has
been canceled!! JUDGE CAMPBELL WILL RULE ON THE WRITTEN DOCUMENTS ALONE, WITHOUT HEARING THE ORAL ARGUMENTS. Please note that we are also canceling the DEMO, since nothing is happening in Phoenix that day. Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who supported the organizing of this event! We do not know when he will issue his ruling. We will keep you posted on developments!

Come Join Us to Protest in Phoenix at the Federal Courthouse to Temporarily Stop the Canyon Uranium Mine! Kaibab National Forest Supervisor Mike Williams illegally allowed Canada-based Energy Fuels to begin digging a uranium mine 15 miles south of the Grand Canyon with no review whatsoever of the 27-year-old Environmental Impact Statement, despite volumes and volumes of new evidence that so-called "low level" radiation from uranium KILLS!

Mike Williams also ignored regulations in the National EnvironmentalProtection Act (NEPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), requiring them to consult with tribes when a sacred area, a traditional cultural property, has been designated, as at Red Butte, and they are ignoring new evidence that the uranium mine will inevitably contaminate the massive aquifer that feeds the Colorado River and its many springs. NEW EVIDENCE PROVES that Radioactive uranium causes cancers, birth defects and DNA mutations. Once released into the environment it goes on radiating whatever it gets into for billions of years - in other words: FOREVER!

The aquifers on the Navajo Reservation, and creeks within the Grand Canyon National Park, have already been poisoned by past uranium mining. NO MORE! The Colorado River is the lifeblood of the West. The federal court in the person of Judge Campbell will hear oral arguments for an injunction to stop the uranium mine, being brought by the Havasupai Tribe, the Grand Canyon trust, the Sierra Club, and the Center for Biological Diversity. PLEASE SHARE THIS EVENT WITH YOUR FRIENDS!

6.21-23 Gather to ban Grand Canyon Uranium mine! In solidarity with Idle No More

PLEASE SHARE! Now! You are welcome to a three day gathering, June 21-23rd, just south of Grand Canyon National Park, with main gathering happening at dawn June 21st right on Hwy. 64.

We will protest the re-opening of Canyon Uranium Mine on Native sacred lands by praying, bannering, and peacefully demonstrating. This is a call out to all peaceful warriors to come, pray, and decide how to stop the mine.

A base camp has already been set up on Hwy 64, approx. 45 miles north of Williams, AZ (First right after mile marker 219). CALL if possible before arriving! Sometimes we are not there. 928-899-2267.

More camping is available very nearby at the prayer/ceremony site near Red Butte, and also in the high Ponderosas of the National Forest near Canyon Mine itself. Gather now to protect the Grand Canyon, the Colorado Plateau, and the waters, animals, plants and people who live here.

Also on the 21st, the head of the Sierra Club is to meet at 10 am with some of the Havasupai elders, who will be coming up out of the Canyon, at the mine site itself. Red Butte and the Grand Canyon are sacred to several tribes in this region. Energy Fuels must stop digging NOW! Idle No More has called for Friday, June 21st, to be International Indigenous Solidarity Day. Come and help!

This will be our first, opening action and is a three day event. Come prepared for hot days (up to 90) and cool nights (down to 40). Please bring your own water, food, shelter and banner and sign-making materials. We do have some food and some banner-making materials, but will need more.

Base camp will be open through July 2013 for further organizing and actions. We welcome individuals and affinity groups.

6.21 Protesters Take Action Against Grand Canyon Uranium Mine ~ #IdleNoMore International Indigenous Solidarity Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Protesters Take Action Against Grand Canyon Uranium Mine Friday June 21st 7am

Grassroots protesters will take action at 7 am near the junction of Forest Road 305 and AZ Highway 64, independently from but in conjunc
tion with Idle No More’s International Indigenous Solidarity Day, the presence of Havasupai elders, and the Sierra Club’s national executive director at the Canyon Uranium Mine. Grassroots protesters will also be available for interviews.

Energy Fuels Inc., the Toronto-based company digging the mine, have already dug 120 feet down what they hope will be a 1600 foot shaft. If the mine starts extracting uranium, it will expose residents and visitors to "low-level" radiation along Hwy 64. So called “low-level” radiation poisons air, waters, and soils for billions of years, causing cancers, birth defects, and other health problems. Even worse, Arizona's environmental and haulage regulations fail to protect the public from these dangers.

In addition to these health impacts and contamination of the Grand Canyon ecosystem and aquifer, the mine will directly harm the integrity of nearby Red Butte, sacred to the Havasupai and other indigenous people.

For the past thirty years indigenous people of northern Arizona and their allies have been resisting uranium mining at the Grand Canyon. This struggle continues as protesters gather to express their opposition to the Canyon Uranium Mine 15 miles south of the south rim.

The mine, owned by Canada-based Energy Fuels Inc., is located in the Kaibab National Forest –15 miles south of the Grand Canyon. Before approving the mine, both the company and the US Forest Service failed to consult with local tribes as required by law. Instead, the USFS rushed approval by using an outdated Environmental Impact Statement, silencing community input and recent scientific research.

The Mama Bears Brigade have organized an encampment June 1-July ? in opposition to the Canyon Uranium Mine at the south rim. The camp is a space to speak out and inspire action towards a nuclear free world. We invite everyone who wants to protect the Grand Canyon to join us.

previous - The Mama Bears Brigade has now set up an anti-uranium mining peace camp near Red Butte/Grand Canyon, AZ to resist Energy Fuels' new uranium mine there, on traditionally sacred lands. We don't need any more Fukushimas! Enough indigenous peoples have been poisoned by uranium mines already! Join us in one of the most beautiful National Parks in the world for free speech and public education on low-level radiation and the nuclear cycle - over two million people visit the Park each summer. On Highway 64 15 miles south of the Grand Canyon National Park between MP 219-220. Korea Electric Power Company is a major stockholder at Canyon Mine, and at the mine at sacred Mt Taylor, near Grants, NM. Energy Fuels is now buying Strathmore, so one giant uranium company is trying to corner the US market because of this year's uranium rush. Help us stop them NOW! No more Fukushimas! No uranium for KEPCO!

30 years after the Diablo Canyon Blockade, the Mama Bears Brigade is out of hibernation! We have just set up an anti-uranium mining camp near Red Butte and the Grand Canyon, AZ, where is Toronto-based Energy Fuels Inc. is already digging the first uranium mine on the South Rim since the Orphan closed down in the 1960s. We have a permit until July 16, and we have a permit to do free speech at several locations inside the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Energy Fuels is digging the mine in a Traditional Cultural Property, which several local tribes believe is sacred. Red Butte is mentioned in creation stories. Yet Kaibab National Forest gave them the go-ahead with a 27-year-ol Environmental Impact Statement which ignores the requirement to consult with the tribes, and ignores new scientific evidence on low-level radiation and Havasupai freedom of religion. Energy Fuels, a Canadian corporation, is also in the process of buying Strathmore, the uranium company hoping to get more uranium from the Grants area near Mt. Taylor, also a sacred site. The Korean Electricity Production Company (KEPCO), is a major stockholder in both projects. No more Fukushimas! You are invited to come and help us resist Energy Fuels, NOW. The Havasupai Tribe, the Sierra Club, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Grand Canyon Trust are all parties in a recent lawsuit trying to stop them. Litigation has been going on for thirty years, and they are still letting them dig NOW. And over 300,000 people signed a petition to protect the Grand Canyon's watershed from uranium mining, which resulted in the landmark withdrawal of over a million acres from future claims, but doesn't cover old claims. That is why Energy Fuels is digging and desecrating right now. Help us stop them! Camping is primitive, but water, showers and groceries are only a few miles away. Email: mamabearsbrigade@gmail.com or LIKE our Facebook page to get regular updates. No more poisoning of indigenous peoples! The Southwest is not a sacrifice zone!
