STOP TAXPAYER LOAN FOR NEW NUCLEAR REACTORS

TO: PRESIDENT OBAMA, ENERGY SECRETARY MONIZ

The Department of Energy first approved a conditional taxpayer loan for two new nuclear reactors at the Vogtle site in Georgia more than 3 1/2 years ago. That loan still has not passed muster with your own Office of Management and Budget.

It is clear that the utilities involved simply want a sweetheart deal for that loan that would put more than $8 billion tax dollars at substantial risk.

The conditional loan guarantee was granted under the presumption that the reactors would be built on time and on budget. Yet these reactors are already about two years behind schedule and hundreds of millions of dollars over budget, according to the Georgia Public Service Commission's own watchdog. Meanwhile, electricity demand in the region is growing far slower than projected when this project began in 2008. I remind you that the original Vogtle reactors were 1200% over budget when completed! The potential for taxpayer losses that would dwarf the Solyndra debacle is extraordinarily high.

Please reject this loan completely and permanently now.

Tell President Obama to cancel the Vogtle Loan Guarantee! We don't want or need new nuclear reactors.

I am writing to ask that you cancel the Vogtle loan guarantee. Expansion of Plant Vogtle represents an energy future that we neither want nor need. 

Nuclear reactors present a danger to public health and safety because we still don't have any permanent waste repository, the fuel cycle is fraught with radiation hazards and the safety and security of current reactors is not adequate. 

Loan guarantees present a huge risk to taxpayers, as reactors are beset by enormous capital costs, delays, and overruns. Vogtle has many of these features already as well as evidence of shoddy construction and before it becomes operational it will likely have more.  

We can meet climate change goals with clean, green renewable energy and efficiency measures. An investment in Vogtle is a step in the wrong direction. Please reconsider your commitment to this risky project.
