8.6 UK: REMEMBER HIROSHIMA / NUCLEAR WARFARE 2013

On 6th and 9th August 1945, the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The suffering and horror caused by these explosions should have brought an end to this terrible experiment. Instead, 68 years on, the earth is increasingly threatened by stockpiles of nuclear warheads, a renaissance of civil/military nuclear programmes, and the unbridled use of uranium as a component of US and UK weapon systems.

The UK Government is currently planning to replace its Trident warheads and submarine bases. This will cost the taxpayer over £100 billion, money many believe would be better spent on housing, health or education.

Join us at the ARC Bar on 6th August for an evening of talks, film clips and discussion on security in the nuclear age, with topics ranging from the impact of Trident on the economy and climate change, the links between civil and military nuclear industries, the costs of nuclear new build, the UK/French connection and the breaking of the non-proliferation treaty, and radioactive warfare in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

‘Irreparable’ safety issues: All US nuclear reactors should be replaced, ‘Band-Aids’ won’t help

~ "replaced" with truly clean safe and renewable energy!
~ shut them all down ~ no new nukes!

Published April 09, 2013

All 104 nuclear reactors currently operational in the US have irreparable safety issues and should be taken out of commission and replaced, former chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Gregory B. Jaczko said.
The comments, made during the Carnegie International Nuclear Policy Conference, are “highly unusual” for a current or former member of the safety commission, according to The New York Times. Asked why he had suddenly decided to make the remarks, Jaczko implied that he had only recently arrived at these conclusions following the serious aftermath of Japan’s tsunami-stricken Fukushima Daichii nuclear facility.

“I was just thinking about the issues more, and watching as the industry and the regulators and the whole nuclear safety community continues to try to figure out how to address these very, very difficult problems,” which were made more evident by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan, he said. “Continuing to put Band-Aid on Band-Aid is not going to fix the problem.”

California Medical Association resolution: Monitoring for Radiation in Seafood

Monitoring for Radiation in Seafood (Res. 414): The delegates adopted an amended California resolution that asks AMA to call for the federal government to continue to monitor and fully report the radioactivity levels of edible Pacific Ocean species sold in the United States that could reasonably have been exposed to radiation from the ongoing Fukushima disaster and to include the potential health implications of consuming such foods.

Fukushima Continues to Spew its Darkness | NukeFree.org

by Harvey Wasserman

Radiation leaks, steam releases, disease and death continue to spew from Fukushima and a disaster which is far from over. Its most profound threat to the global ecology---a spent fuel fire---is still very much with us.
The latest steam leak has raised fears around the planet. A worst-case scenario of an on-going out-of-control fission reaction was dismissed by the owners, Tokyo Electric, because they didn't find xenon in the plume. The company says the steam likely came from rain water being vaporized by residual heat in one of plant's stricken reactors.
But independent experts tend to disbelieve anything Tepco says, for good reason. Reactor Units One, Two and Three have exploded at Fukushima despite decades of official assurances that commercial atomic power plants could not explode at all. The company has been unable to clear out enough radioactive debris to allow it to put a cover over the site that might contain further airborne emissions.
Tepco has also been forced to admit that it has been leaking radioactive water into the ocean ever since the disaster began on March 11, 2011. In one instance it admitted to a 90-fold increase of Cesium in a nearby test over a period of just 3 days.
Earlier this year a rat ate through critical electrical cables, shorting out a critical cooling system. When Tepco workers were dispatched to install metal guards to protect the cabling, they managed to short out the system yet again.
Early this month Fukushima's former chief operator, Masao Yoshida, died of esophogeal cancer at the age of 58. Masao became a hero during the worst of the disaster by standing firm at his on-site command post as multiple explosions rocked the reactor complex. Tepco claimed his ensuing cancer and death were "unlikely" to have been caused by Fukushima's radiation.
The impact of work in and near the reactors has become a rising concern. Critics have warned that there are not enough skilled technicians willing to sacrifice themselves at the plant. Tepco has worsened the situation by applying to open a number of its shut reactors elsewhere in Japan, straining its already depleted skilled workforce even further.
Meanwhile, a staggering 40% rise in thyroid irregularities among young children in the area has caused a deepening concern about widespread health impacts from Fukushima's fallout within the general public. Because these numbers have come in just two years after the disaster, the percentage of affected children is expected to continue to rise.
And the worst fear of all remains unabated. At Unit Four, which apparently did not actually explode, the building's structural integrity has been seriously undermined. Debate continues to rage over exactly how this happened.
But there's no doubt that a pool containing many tons of highly radioactive used fuel is suspended 100 feet in the air, with little left to support the structure. Should an earthquake or other trauma knock the pool to the ground, there's a high likelihood the fuel rods could catch fire.
In such an event, the radioactive emissions could be catastrophic. Intensely lethal emissions could spew for a very long time, eventually circling the globe many times, wrecking untold havoc.
The Japanese have removed two apparently unused rods from the fuel pool so far. But intense international pressure to clear out the rest of them has thus far been unsuccessful.
So while a depleted, discredited and disorganized nuclear utility moves to restart its other reactors, its stricken units at Fukushima continue to hold the rest of us at the brink of apocalyptic terror.

Anti-Atom-Camp gestartet ~ "Anti-nuclear Camp Launched"

Anti-nuclear Camp Launched

(google translate, from German; original German text below) -

The mood on the anti-nuclear camp in Metelen is good. About 70 activists have now arrived in Metelen on the grounds of farmer Heiner Konert and discuss how the shutdown of all nuclear plants can be achieved worldwide.
Already on Friday of yesterday launched the program of short films for anti-nuclear resistance. Saturday morning sit-ins were then trained and tested with fun, how it feels to be carried away by the police during an eviction. "It is important to actively address polluting and inhumane nuclear facilities - sit-ins are there a great and relatively easy means" workshop participant reported Franziska.
On Saturday afternoon Anwohner_innen came over for coffee. There were many interesting discussions, for example about the benefits of protest against the nuclear industry. Even from a distance, but there were also people from the Samba workshop to hear the powerful drumming next to the windmill for renewable energy. At the same time a taster climbing took place. Evening, about 30 people listened to the lecture Gronau uranium enrichment plant and the current developments there.
"Great was the attention of Zuhörer_innen and active participation in the discussion." Says Christian, a visitor to the camp.
A film about the prevention of a nuclear power plant construction in France and a lecture on dirty tricks of the police and judiciary were well received.
The weather was great and everyone is completely satisfied, as Irene says: "The atmosphere is great and we are looking forward to the next few days."

7.24 PHONE IN: Davis-Besse Steam Generator Replacement Hearing

DAVIS-BESSE HEARING ALERT! – PLEASE PHONE IN!

Davis-Besse Steam Generator Replacement Hearing before the
Atomic Safety and Licensing Board. The “Telephonic Oral Hearing” will begin at 1:30 pm EST Wed., July 24, 2013. Please phone into Hearing @ 800-779-1642 passcode is 8093521

Please phone in as we need to let the ASLB know that the whole world is watching. From the very top the NRC wants this Intervention shutdown. A very similar Intervention at San Onofre resulted in shutting two reactors. – Please mark your calendar and mark the above numbers. This Intervention has far reaching implications at other nuclear plants. Thank you for spreading the word.

ASLB Hearing Notification link:

ASLB TO HEAR ORAL ARGUMENTS WED., JULY 24th ON
DAVIS-BESSE STEAM GENERATOR REPLACEMENTS

The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will hear oral arguments Wed., July 24, 2013 on the Davis-Besse nuclear plant steam generator replacements. The contention alleges that at least nine major nuclear plant modifications have not been scrutinized and must do so, in a full license amendment proceeding. A very similar contention led to the permanent shutdown of two reactors at San Onofre nuclear plant in CA on June 7th.

The contention was filed May 20th by Interveners including Beyond Nuclear, Citizens Environment Alliance of Southwestern Ontario, Don’t Waste Michigan, and the Sierra Club of Ohio. The oral arguments will discuss standing and whether the ASLB should admit the contention on the merits. The (ASLB) Board intends to ask questions regarding the Joint Petitioners’ standing and the admissibility of the proffered contention.

The steam generator replacement concerns at Davis-Besse are nearly identical to the engineering shortcomings at the San Onofre reactors which led to their failure and ultimate closing of those reactors. Fairewinds Associates,Inc's Chief Engineer Arnold Gundersen provided expert testimony, on behalf of Friends of the Earth, which led to the closing of the two San Onofre reactors. Arnold Gundersen is now expert for the environmental interveners on the Davis-Besse steam generator replacements.

Background narratives with updates are posted at Beyond Nuclear at the following links: http://www.beyondnuclear.org/home/2013/5/21/environmental-coalition-challenges-experimental-steam-genera.html

http://www.beyondnuclear.org/home/2013/7/12/coalition-rebuts-motions-to-strike-at-davis-besse-while-foe.html

The entire ASLB docket including environmental interveners testimony and petition will soon be posted at Beyond Nuclear as Davis-Besse Hearing Docket Steam Generators, or could be sent upon request to mkeeganj@comcast.net

Interveners are seeking to prevent the unregulated installation of replacement steam generators which are not “like-for-like”, “same-for-same”, “fit-form-function”. FirstEnergy’s attempts to install steam generators without adequate oversight put the entire Great Lakes basin at risk of a catastrophic cascading steam generator failure leading to Loss of Coolant Accident or LOCA resulting in meltdown and potentially catastrophic radioactivity releases.
